The virtual half-day education conference is postponed. Our planned January 13 conference on school readiness has been postponed until later in 2022.  We hope to have a firm date to announce in our next newsletter. Our plan is to continue the conversation begun in 2015 on ensuring Idaho children enter kindergarten and first grade ready to learn.  The 2022 program will spotlight innovative solutions being implemented throughout our state and ensuring all Idaho children can access the tools they need to enter school ready to learn.

2021 PANEL DISCUSSION: CLIMATE CHANGE AND PUBLIC LANDS

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the Andrus Center partnered with the Public Lands Foundation to host a conversation on climate change and the public lands on November 10, 2021. The unique panel discussion was moderated by June Shoemaker, BLM Idaho State Director and was broadcast live to Facebook and Youtube from Boise State University. The panelists joining the discussion were BSU Professor Jen Pierce, UC Berkeley Professor Steven Beissinger, TRCP's Center for Public Lands Director Madeleine West, and National Interagency Fire Center Director Grant Beebe. The Andrus Center hopes to partner with organizations even more in the coming year on relevant environmental topics.

ANDRUS SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Thanks to supporters like you, 2021 saw the completion of our Andrus Scholars endowment! The Andrus Scholars program was launched in 2019 to support our future environment and public lands leaders through meaningful work experience and skill development. Boise State University students obtain hands-on experience at various agencies during a 10 week summer internship. The Andrus Center has partnered with such agencies as Bureau of Land Management, Boise National Forest, Idaho Conservation League, Idaho Department of Fish and Game, Advocates for the West, and Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission.  This year we are happy to open the opportunity for five Boise State University students from both Environmental Studies and Biology majors. We'll be announcing our 2022 Andrus Scholars recipients in our Spring newsletter.

YOUNG WOMEN AND LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Learn more about YWLC The 4th annual Young Women and Leadership conference is scheduled for Tuesday, March 15, 2022. 9th-12th grade students will hear from an inspirational keynote speaker and participate in a student showcase of leaders from the youth of today – our leaders of tomorrow. The conference is free to high school students and hosted virtually from 4pm - 6pm MT. If you know of any high schoolers interested in participating, please direct them to our website.

WOMEN AND LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

The Andrus Center hosted the 9th annual Women and Leadership conference virtually in September. Nearly 1,100 registrants from 37 states, the District of Columbia, and 7 countries attended! The recordings are available to registrants now and will become available for viewing by the general public in September 2022. SAVE THE DATE FOR NEXT YEAR! Women and Leadership 2022 will be hosted on September 14 and 15, 2022. We hope to provide an in-person conference at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho AND a virtual component to allow for folks to chime in from across the world.

NEW--JOHN FREEMUTH STUDENT CONGRESS

In collaboration with the Public Lands Foundation, Bureau of Land Management, and National Association of Forest Service Retirees, the Andrus Center is hosting the inaugural John Freemuth Student Congress October 2-5, 2022. The late Dr. John Freemuth was heavily involved in past biennial Student Congresses and the event will be re-named in his honor to continue his legacy. Approximately 25 college students and recent graduates are selected from nearly 70 colleges and universities across the country to participate. The 4-day event starts with a reception and includes a field trip/community service project related to the themed topic. 2022's topic will be Fire Management and will be hosted at Boise State University Oct. 2-5th. Students will explore and make recommendations to the land management agencies related to: fire ecology, managing fire for natural resources, the effects of climate change on fire management, fire in different ecosystems, displacement of people and resources following fire, the value of fire management, and the socio-political aftermath of fire. There is no cost for students to participate and the costs are covered by sponsors and various partners.
