Hello Friends,

As the fireworks go off and the calendar flips to a new year, we at the Girls Club of Los Angeles (GCLA) want to take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate the year that just passed. This year, our 50th in existence as an organization has been a year of recognition, reflection, transition, and inspiration.

Recognition:

GCLA wants to recognize and genuinely thank our friends, partners, staff, volunteers, donors, parents, and recipients who have been on the journey with us for years. We are fortunate to have received several awards and commendations for our work. We acknowledge that every plaque and trophy we received is because of the blood, sweat, toil, and tears shed by every one of you. It has been said that "It takes a village to raise a child," and we recognize that it takes thousands of people hours to uplift a community. We honor you, thank you, and are here because of you.

Reflection:

Living and working through this momentous year has allowed us to reflect on our past 50 years. Together we've endured the earthquakes, the '92 Los Angeles Riots, Y2K, 9/11, the 2008 economic collapse, the global pandemic, and various moments of racial unrest. Yet, we've also celebrated many moments of collective advancement. We've elected the first African America President, the first female, multiracial Vice President, and most recently, Los Angeles elected its first female African American mayor. Though the Supreme Court dealt a recent blow to women's reproductive rights, our children and youth are growing up with more opportunities for education and upward advancement than at any time in our history. The children and youth advancing through our programs are role models representing all races, creeds, ethnicity, and gender identity.

Transition:

As the sands pass through to the bottom of the hourglass, we become more mindful that everything changes. Over the years, we have lost dear friends and loved ones while welcoming new life and beginnings. As a result, GCLA is incorporating new programs to prepare for our next 50 years of growth as an organization. For example, GCLA has focused on social justice and equity awareness. Our youth development programs are growing and expanding to reduce violence and prevent substance abuse use. In addition, our food distribution program has scaled to provide food security to hundreds of families per month. Our Early Learning programs have grown from delivering child development in-house to sub-contracting, training, and guidance to centers and family childcare providers throughout the Southern California region. GCLA will also expand our digital communication offerings to give us greater reach and influence within the community. As our society changes, we're adapting to ensure that no child, youth, adult, or senior is left behind.

Inspiration:

All of this change has renewed within us a sense of hope. Every one of you inspires the best in us. Serving this fabulous community is truly an honor, privilege, and blessing. We've seen the children in our childcare center become successful and bring their children here. We are proud to be a hub of multigenerational success, a living legacy of South Los Angeles' rich history. We are happy and grateful to be a piece of the fabric of our community's safety net. We pray for every man, woman, child, and family to dream big and live into those dreams. We are honored to fulfill our purpose on this planet to love, serve, and give. May we all progress forward, seeking peace and prosperity.

Hola amigos,

A medida que estallan los fuegos artificiales y el calendario cambia a un nuevo año, en el Girls Club of Los Angeles, (GCLA) por sus siglas en inglés, queremos tomarnos un momento para reconocer y apreciar el año que acaba de pasar. Este año, el 50 de nuestra existencia como organización, ha sido un año de reconocimiento, reflexión, transición e inspiración.

Reconocimiento:

GCLA quiere reconocer y agradecer genuinamente a nuestros amigos, socios, personal, voluntarios, donantes, padres y beneficiarios que han estado en el viaje con nosotros durante años. Tenemos la suerte de haber recibido varios premios y menciones por nuestro trabajo. Reconocemos que cada placa y trofeo que recibimos es por la sangre, el sudor, el trabajo y las lágrimas derramadas por cada uno de ustedes. Se ha dicho que "se necesita un pueblo para criar a un niño", y reconocemos que se necesitan miles de horas de personas para levantar una comunidad. Los honramos, gracias, y estamos aquí gracias a ustedes.

Reflexión:

Vivir y trabajar durante este año trascendental nos ha permitido reflexionar sobre nuestros últimos 50 años. Juntos hemos soportado los terremotos, los disturbios de Los Ángeles del 92, el Y2K, el 11 de septiembre, el colapso económico de 2008, la pandemia mundial y varios momentos de disturbios raciales. Sin embargo, también hemos celebrado muchos momentos de avance colectivo. Hemos elegido a la primera presidenta afroamericana, la primera vicepresidenta multirracial y, más recientemente, Los Ángeles eligió a su primera alcaldesa afroamericana. Aunque la Corte Suprema asestó un golpe reciente a los derechos reproductivos de las mujeres, nuestros niños y jóvenes están creciendo con más oportunidades de educación y progreso que en cualquier otro momento de nuestra historia. Inspiración:

Servir a esta fabulosa comunidad es verdaderamente un honor, un privilegio y una bendición. Hemos visto a los niños en nuestro centro de cuidado infantil tener éxito y traer a sus hijos aquí. Estamos orgullosos de ser un centro de éxito multigeneracional, un legado vivo de la rica historia del sur de Los Ángeles. Estamos felices y agradecidos de ser una pieza del tejido de la red de seguridad de nuestra comunidad. Oramos por cada hombre, mujer, niño y familia para que sueñen en grande y vivan esos sueños. Project LEAYD Going Strong in Year 4

Proyecto LEAYD Fortaleciéndose en el Año 4

Girls Club of Los Angeles’ flagship after-school enrichment program is finishing 2022 strong and will accept new students in January 2023. To allow more students to participate in the programs, Project LEAYD (Leaders Enriching Adolescent Youth Development) split into two cohorts. The Fall cohort began working in person at Teach Tech with students from Teach Academy. The winter group will be a hybrid virtual and in-person program open to all South Los Angeles students.

Dr. Shanetta Weatherspoon of R&W Leadership Services which focuses on transforming people, businesses, and communities into leaders, led an engaging workshop series called “You're Next: Roadmap to College & Career Readiness.” "You're Next" offers students a crash course in everything they need to prepare for the college process. She covered applications, financial aid, essays, and how to build a resume. The students were highly engaged as Dr. Weatherspoon’s workshop made college an attainable and affordable goal.

Alicia Malone, GCLA’s Senior Manager of Community of Practice & Innovation is excited by what she saw in the program. “The students were truly engaged with Dr. Weatherspoon’s series. We saw the light bulb go off in the student’s heads that, yes, they can make it to college and have the career they dream for themselves.”

The students were also given support through gift cards, t-shirts, and school supplies. GCLA Executive Director, Gloria J. Davis had this to say, “We are proud to nurture the seeds of growth in these scholars. We need more people to recognize the potential of these children and invest in their success. This is the next generation of doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers, and civic leaders. Their future is our future.”

In addition to the Teach Tech program, Project LEAYD will be expanding its offering for the winter session with a hybrid virtual/in-person program starting in January. The goal is to allow more students to receive the guidance, mentorship, and assistance that has led many South Los Angeles students to actualize their education dreams. El programa insignia de enriquecimiento después de la escuela de Girls Club of Los Angeles está terminando el 2022 con fuerza y aceptará nuevos estudiantes en enero de 2023. GCLA Continues the Spirit of Giving with December Food Gift Card Giveaway

To continue celebrating our 50 years of service in South Los Angeles, GCLA is once again giving $50 dollar food gift cards to residents in need. Utilizing the generous donations of Los Angeles City Councilperson Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, and The Peoples Project, GCLA is feeding 500 families over the holidays.

The wonderful act of kindness comes on the heels of the successful gift card giveaway for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Families expressed deep gratitude for the food and gift cards. One South LA young person expressed their thanks, saying “This was the most food we’ve ever had.” Michelle Vasquez, GCLA’s Community Outreach & Referral Specialist said “The lines were so long and everyone was so grateful. People were happy to be able to feed their families for the holiday.”

Holiday Program

El Programa Festivo de Faiths Children’s Center

December 14, 2022 - South Los Angeles. Faith Children’s Center held its annual Holiday Program with students, teachers, and caretakers. This year’s theme was “Winter Wonderland.” The students put on a fantastic show singing, dancing, and performing short plays to the delight of their parents and families.

Under the direction of GCLA’s Executive Director, teachers, Russchelle Baldwin, children and teachers made beautiful sets and costumes to fill with their imagination and joy. “We enjoyed seeing the wonderful memories our children created for their families.” - Russchelle Baldwin. To take advantage of the technology, this year’s show was shot, assembled, and broadcast to parents via zoom. This allowed more parents to share in the children’s joy during the holiday season.

14 de diciembre de 2022 - Sur de Los Ángeles. Faith Childrens Center llevó a cabo su programa anual de festividades con estudiantes, maestros y cuidadores. El tema de este año fue “Winter Wonderland”. Los estudiantes realizaron un espectáculo fantástico cantando, bailando y realizando obras cortas para el deleite de sus padres y familias.

Bajo la dirección de la Directora Ejecutiva de GCLA, las maestras, Russchelle Baldwin, los niños y las maestras crearon hermosos decorados y disfraces para llenarlos con su imaginación y alegría. “Disfrutamos viendo los maravillosos recuerdos que nuestros hijos crearon para sus familias”. -Ruschelle Baldwin. Para aprovechar la tecnología, el programa de este año fue filmado, ensamblado y transmitido a los padres a través de zoom. Partner Spotlight: Food Forward

Food Forward

This year’s food program has been a success with successive months of record-breaking numbers of individuals and families served. One of the important partners in delivering food to the community is Food Forward. Food Forward supplies GCLA with fresh fruits and vegetables to feed South Los Angeles families. Food Forward is a nonprofit organization that brings fresh surplus fruits and vegetables to people experiencing food insecurity across 12 California counties and six adjacent states, including tribal lands. The organization has recovered over 66 million pounds of produce to date.

South Los Angeles residents who receive GCLA food giveaways should know that this is truly a farm-to-table operation, which means they’re getting fresh produce! In addition to importing produce from foreign sources, Food Forward works with local farmers right here in Southern California to keep families fed. LaNeisha Hodo Food Forward’s Wholesale Agency Relations Coordinator had this to say “We work with everyone from backyard farmers, farmers markets, and several other local sources to feed families in need. It is truly an honor to earn a living filling community’s needs.”

GCLA Hikes Griffith Park with The Outdoor Initiative

Saturday, December 10, 2022 GCLA teamed up with the nonprofit The Outdoor Initiative to take residents and students on a hike to the Griffith Park Observatory. The Outdoor Initiative’s mission is to mentor students by using the engagement of outdoor adventures in L.A.’s natural surroundings.

On a beautiful Saturday Morning, about a dozen South Los Angeles residents hiked the hills of Griffith Park all the way to the summit. When they reached the Griffith Park Observatory, they were treated to a private tour of the Observatory. Christopher Thomas, GCLA’s Administrative Assistant who coordinated the trip with The Outdoor Initiative was excited about the hike, “We learned so much about the sky and solar system. It was mind-blowing to learn so many facts about the moon, stars, and planets. Everyone loved it.”

GCLA is excited to plan future excursions with The Outdoor Initiative. Their team of action-based, compassionate, and empathetic mentors, will help future generations tap into their hidden passions and inspire a connection with the outdoors.

GCLA Camina por el Parque Griffith con The Outdoor Initiative

Sábado, 10 de diciembre de 2022 GCLA se asoció con la organización sin fines de lucro The Outdoor Initiative para llevar a los residentes y estudiantes a una caminata al Observatorio del Parque Griffith. La misión de The Outdoor Initiative es guiar a los estudiantes mediante la participación de aventuras al aire libre en el entorno natural de Los Ángeles.
