Ai-Chi:

“The Water Way to Healing”

Looking for a way to enhance movement while reducing stress and anxiety? Want to find a way to manage pain, improve sleep quality and promote emotional resilience? Time to learn Ai -Chi!

Ai -Chi is a slow-moving breath-centered aquatic exercise that is based on the principles of T’ai Chi (a land-based exercise) and Watsu (Water Shiatsu, another aquatic therapeutic technique). The creator, Japanese Olympic swim coach Jun Konno, was inspired after viewing slow motion films of sea snakes moving in the water.

Ai-Chi incorporates slow movements completed while standing in water that is chest to shoulder depth. The focus is on recruiting muscle involvement to improve body mechanics, train core strength, obtain better physical alignment, and promote improved stability at the thoracic spine, lumbar spine, and pelvis. Principles of deep breathing and progressive relaxation are incorporated into the movements. Ai-Chi is beneficial for everyone, but those who have difficulty with exercise on land due to medical diagnoses that affect movement are particularly fond of Ai-Chi for its gentle but focused approach.

Through activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, AI-Chi creates physiological changes in the body. It promotes oxygen exchange by enhancing oxygen intake and the release of carbon dioxide, thus creating optimal blood pH. Diaphragmatic breathing enhances lymphatic flow and immune function. It is shown to decrease blood pressure, heart rate, and to lower stress levels.

AI- Chi’s gentle, repetitive movements lead to increased flexibility, reduced joint stiffness, and improved connective tissue mobility. Participants also report improved emotional state, reduced depression and anxiety, improved balance, gait, and musculoskeletal coordination, as well as reduced pain and less reliance on prescription pain medications.

ProAction has Aquatic Physical Therapists who are trained in teaching the techniques of Ai-Chi. We have found this gentle yet effective method to be so useful that we decided to offer an Ai-Chi class! Stand by for more details in early 2026!

ProAction Pointers

  • Ai-Chi takes place in an aquatic environment. It is a gentle method for enhancing movement and relaxation.

  • Ai-Chi incorporates diaphragmatic breathing which has a positive influence over all other movement patterns.

  • Scientific research shows ai-chi to be beneficial for metabolism, circulation, musculoskeletal strength and endurance, fall reduction/balance improvement, and stress reduction.
