Reflecting on 2017

As another year wraps up, we want to take the time to thank each of you for your support of The First Tee of Howard County, and share some key highlights from 2017:
  • 560 students participated in our three sessions at Fairway Hills and our three affiliate courses
  • 24 volunteer coaches dedicated their time to our program
  • 6 coaches attended a rigorous training program through The First Tee national office
  • 2 student participants were selected in competitive application processes to attend 3 national First Tee educational and academy training opportunities
  • Through the National School Program (NSP), we taught 18,992 elementary schoolers in 33 schools the basics of golf
  • Our DRIVE program reached 4,366 K-12 students in 6 after-school programs
  • 21 volunteer board members dedicated their time to guiding the organization's strategic decisions and raising more than $100,000 from our annual Taste for The First Tee, Golf Tournament and Pebble Beach Raffle, as well as helped raise more than $26,000 to purchase a van for the program
  • 75 participants played in The First Tee Metro Tour
  • Isabel Trojillo (ACE-level participant) won the Howard County Girls Golf Title
  • Jackie Cherry (ACE-level participant) won the District V Women's Golf Title and was named Howard County Girls Golfer of the Year
  • All six girls named to the All County First Team are First Tee participants (Alex Abrams, Jackie Cherry, Megumi Fukuzawa, Logan Lurie, Faith McIlvain and Isabel Trojillo)
  • 4 of the 6 girls on the County Second Team are participants of The First Tee (Adrienne Lesho, Joanna Park and Leelee Sands) or past participants (Julianna Dorsch)
  • The Howard High School Girls Golf team (all First Tee participants) won the County Interscholastic Standings for the fourth consecutive year
  • Harper Lurie started her first year in college at Christopher Newport University on the women's golf team, and won the 2017 Marilynn Smith Scholarship, one of the LPGA Foundation grants
  • The Howard County Good Sports Award Banquet recognized Logan Lurie and Steve Weathersbee as Sports Program Participants and Youth Coach, respectively, and Don was honored to accept an award for Adult Administrator, as well as the Chairman's Award at The First Tee's national network meeting in Orlando this fall.
We sincerely thank you for everything you do to make these accomplishments possible. Without the parents, sponsors, coaches, board members, other volunteers and of course, our amazing participants, our chapter would not be the special community that it is.

On behalf of everyone at The First Tee of Howard County, we wish you the happiest of holidays and lots of birdies in 2018!

Warmest Wishes,

Don Van Deusen

The Golf Channel Profiles Cedar Lane Special Center

Golf Channel Cedar Lane School

"It's not that a ball went in a hole. It's not that a golf club swang. It's that you just showed what you can do. And you truly broke every barrier when you got here."

Jody Duff, an educator at The Cedar Lane Special Center in Fulton, was recently profiled by The Golf Channel for her work using golf to reach special needs students.

The Cedar Lane Special Center is one of our National School Program sites where The First Tee has partnered to provide golf and life skills curriculum, as well as equipment, and we are thrilled that the Golf Channel chose to highlight Jody Duff and her amazing students.
