Happy Holidays from all of us at SGHT

Nacho Canepa

As 2024 draws to a close, we look back on what an incredible year it has been for South Georgia and SGHT! Next year, SGHT turns 20 so big things are happening in the future - including the Whaling Station Initiative with our Whale Memorial and the hope to begin the re-stabilisation of the Stromness Manager's Villa. We are incredibly grateful for your support this year and we hope you will continue to help us achieve our big dreams for South Georgia in 2025 and beyond too.

Fur seal pups & tidy ups: November blog

SGHT Director South Georgia Deirdre Mitchell

The refrain from the museum team throughout November was ‘where did October go?!’, and it seems like November has now met the same fate!

November was a busy month for the museum team, with us welcoming 22 ships and 2570 passengers to Grytviken! Now, while we promise we don’t have favourites, one ship did cause particular excitement when it arrived in the bay. Bark Europa looks a little different from the ships we normally see as she’s a triple-masted sailing vessel originally built in 1911. Seeing her in the bay always calls to mind historic photos of Grytviken featuring the Endurance before she departed on her ill-fated expedition to Antarctica. It’s an impressive sight!

Remembering CA Larson 100 years on

On 8 December, we marked the 100th anniversary of the passing of Carl Anton Larsen, a true titan of Antarctic exploration. Born in Norway in 1860, Larsen's life was a blend of adventure, science, and industry. His exploration of the Antarctic led to the discovery of the Larsen Ice Shelf, the Foyn Coast, and other crucial features on the Peninsula.

He captained several ships and conducted polar research alongside the whaling and sealing. On Seymour Island, he discovered fossils which was a great scientific discovery in 1888. They were the first fossils found in Antarctica.

It was on the Swedish Antarctic Expedition in 1904 that he was inspired to establish Grytviken – or Grytvik (Pot Bay) – as a village and a whaling station. It was the first whaling station in South Georgia, but more importantly, the first in the Southern Ocean. Its opening marked a significant turning point in the history of Antarctic exploration and industry.

As the captain of the first factory ship, Larsen ushered in a new era of large-scale deep-sea whaling. Sadly, he died aged 64 in 1924 while on one of these voyages in the Ross Sea. Altogether, you will find 12 place names below the Convergence tied to this remarkable man.

Exciting news: coming soon - an exhibition that celebrates the life of Carl Anton Larsen and to mark the centenary of his death.

Whale Songs: A Sculptor's Journey to South Georgia

Accompany artist Michael Visocchi during his first journey to South Georgia and hear his insights on our podcast. The series follows how Michael was inspired to create a Whale Memorial - Commensalis: The Spirit Tables of South Georgia.

In our final episode, Michael reflects on the creative process of making his inspiration a reality within the abandoned whaling station of Grytviken.

The Whale Memorial will commemorate the loss and celebrate the recovery of whales at South Georgia. It will be a reminder for everyone who cares about nature of how close we were to losing South Georgia’s whales and will help to raise funds for vital research to protect the future of whales in the Southern Ocean.
