Reflecting on 2025
As we close out 2025, I am filled with gratitude and pride for all we have accomplished together at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County. This year has been a true testament to the dedication, resilience, and innovative spirit of our staff, volunteers, community partners, and supporters.
Across every program area — from Marine and Agriculture to Community Education, Energy, 4-H, and the Suffolk County Farm — our teams have continued to deliver high-impact education, vital services, and meaningful outreach to our residents. Whether it was supporting local producers, advancing environmental stewardship, expanding nutrition and health education, or strengthening youth development opportunities, your efforts made a difference every single day.
This year was also marked by an extraordinary demonstration of support from our county partners. We extend our sincere thanks to Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine and to all of our Suffolk County legislators, who unanimously approved a 2% budget increase for every Suffolk County–funded CCE Suffolk program. Their commitment to our mission affirms the value of our work, strengthens our ability to serve communities across the county, and ensures that our programs can continue to grow and respond to emerging needs.
2025 was also a year of growth. We deepened partnerships with county and state agencies, forged new community collaborations, enhanced our bilingual outreach, expanded access to resources, and elevated our visibility across Long Island. Thanks to your commitment, more families, farmers, small businesses, educators, and community leaders turned to CCE Suffolk as a trusted source of knowledge and support.
I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to our Board of Directors for their guidance and to every staff member whose passion drives our mission forward. Your work continues to strengthen our communities and ensure that CCE Suffolk remains a cornerstone of education and innovation in our region.
As we look ahead to 2026, I am excited for what we will build together — new programs, stronger partnerships, and even greater impact.
Thank you for another remarkable year. Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season and a healthy, peaceful New Year.
Vanessa Lockel

| | Members of our CCE Suffolk Marine Team presented to the Suffolk County Legislature’s Environment, Parks and Agriculture (EPA) Committee on the use of Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs) to reduce Nitrogen into Suffolk County surface waters. | |
PRBs are innovative structures installed in the ground that intercept natural groundwater flow and help reduce nitrogen before it reaches our bays and estuaries. As water flows through a barrier consisting of either wood chips or food grade vegetable oil, it feeds naturally occurring bacteria which reduce or eliminate nitrogen, which, in excess, can fuel excessive algal growth in our coastal waters.
Because Long Island’s groundwater flows into bays and harbors from every community, there are many opportunities to use this technology to reduce nitrogen inputs: helping to improve water quality, protect marine life, and reduce harmful algal blooms.
Dr. Molly Graffam, Water Resources Geochemical Specialist, Marine Program Director Chris Pickerell, and Executive Director Vanessa Lockel shared how PRBs can play a vital role in managing water quality in Suffolk County for the benefit of future generations.

Estella’s Memorial 5K: Honoring a Legacy at the Suffolk County Farm
The Suffolk County Farm & Education Center proudly hosted Estella’s Memorial 5K for the very first time this year—transforming the farm’s scenic fields and trails into a meaningful space of remembrance, community, and hope. The event, organized by the Bohemia Track Club in memory of Estella Clasen, brought together runners, families, and supporters united by a shared purpose: raising funds for pancreatic cancer research through the Lustgarten Foundation.
With more than 150 runners participating, the atmosphere was filled with both energy and emotion as attendees gathered on a crisp fall morning. The Suffolk County Farm provided a unique backdrop—wide-open fields, autumn colors, and the warmth of a community-driven educational site—making the event especially moving for longtime supporters of Estella’s legacy.
The Bohemia Track Club, along with friends, family, and volunteers, worked tirelessly to ensure the event captured Estella’s spirit: perseverance, love for the community, and the belief in supporting causes larger than oneself. Special appreciation goes to Bob Clasen, whose commitment has helped keep Estella’s memory alive year after year.
This year’s venue offered participants something truly special. Running through the farm’s picturesque landscape allowed everyone to connect with nature while supporting groundbreaking pancreatic cancer research. The Sayville Running Club also joined the effort, further strengthening the sense of unity among local running communities. All proceeds from the event were donated to the Lustgarten Foundation, helping to advance research, support families, and bring hope to those affected by pancreatic cancer.

CCE Suffolk was proud to support "The First Thanksgiving" mini musical at Building Blocks Preschool in Commack, now celebrating our 15th year being part of this special tradition.
As always, the Building Blocks Developmental Preschool in Commack students did an amazing job bringing this story of “The First Thanksgiving” to life, reminding us of the importance of gratitude, learning, and community during this season.
And the surprise cameos of the show were two turkeys from the Suffolk County farm! CCE Suffolk brought the beloved turkeys as a surprise appearance for the grand finale and the kids absolutely loved it!
It was wonderful to see families, teachers, and local leaders come together. Special thanks to Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy and Suffolk Legislator Leslie Kennedy for joining and supporting this meaningful school event.

Celebrating the Retirement of Charlie Kahn
After 10 incredible years of dedication, teamwork, and heart at the Suffolk County Farm, we are proud to celebrate the retirement of our friend and colleague, Charlie Kahn.
Charlie has been an essential part of our Farm family — always ready to lend a hand, share his knowledge, and bring a sense of calm and kindness to every project. Whether he was supporting daily operations, helping staff through busy days, or making visitors feel welcome, Charlie consistently embodied the spirit of service that makes our community strong.
As Charlie steps into this exciting new chapter of life, we hope he enjoys every moment — from well-deserved rest to new adventures. Although he will be deeply missed, his impact will continue to be felt for years to come. Thank you, Charlie, for your ten years of outstanding work and unwavering dedication to the Suffolk County Farm. We wish you nothing but happiness in your retirement!

Our CCE Pest Management Program hosted the Suffolk County Pesticide Phase-Out CAC meeting at Gabreski Airport.
County departments and committee members toured Dr. Andrew Senesac’s herbicide trial, where they saw firsthand how targeted research on pavement cracks and crevices supports safer, more effective vegetation management on airport grounds.
This science-backed work helps reduce reliance on a single active ingredient and improves long-term control with less product overall. A win for safety, sustainability, and Suffolk County’s environment! Photo credit: Marie Boulier

Strengthening Our Coastal Habitats: CCE Suffolk Expands Marsh Restoration at Vanderbilt
The Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program returned to the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium shoreline in Centerport for the latest phase of our marsh restoration project!

Annual End-of-Year Meeting
We recently wrapped up our Annual End-of-Year Meeting, where staff, board members, and community partners came together to reflect on everything we accomplished in 2025 — and to get excited about what’s ahead.
