Happy Holidays from the Solid Waste Division

Thank you for subscribing to the St. Johns County Solid Waste Division monthly newsletter. As 2021 comes to a close, now is the time to take a minute to reflect on the past 12 months. With over 90,000 residential units serviced every week and roughly 500,000 tons of waste collected this year, it has been a busy year! We take pride in serving our community and providing the high-quality and timely service that every resident deserves. From all of us here at the Solid Waste Division, we would like to wish you a very happy and healthy holiday season!

New Year's Recycling Resolution

Pledge to make a difference by making your New Year's Resolution a commitment to RECYCLING RIGHT!

Recycling reduces the number of natural resources needed to make new products and it avoids environmental damage caused by mining, logging, and processing raw materials. It requires less water and oil and produces less CO2. Recycling also consumes less energy than collecting, transporting, and processing virgin materials.

It is not only important to recycle, but to make sure we are recycling the right things. If food, liquids, or non-recyclable materials find their way into the recycling stream, entire loads can end up in the landfill. You can do your part by:

1. Make sure everything is EMPTY, CLEAN & DRY.

2. LEAVE IT LOOSE in the cart. (Don't bag it)

3. Only recycle items that are accepted in our curbside program. (Don't "Wish-cycle")

For a list of acceptable items, please see the TAKE 5 postcard below (or download it HERE), check the lid on your recycling cart, or visit our website at www.recyclestjohns.com.

In an effort to provide additional options to the community, residents may bring yard waste to the following location free of charge:

Tillman Ridge Transfer Station - 3005 Allen Nease Rd, Elkton, FL 32033, drop-off hours are from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Tips for a More Sustainable Holiday Season

  • Give the gift of experiences instead of things. Cheap or unwanted presents end up in the landfill.

  • Try reusable gift bags instead of wrapping paper.

  • Shop at your local farmers market for organic products and food.

  • Avoid unnecessary purchases and conserve natural resources.

  • Use reusable dinnerware, glasses, and napkins.

  • Try using recycled material for DIY projects and decor.

  • Travel off peak times to avoid heavy traffic delays and reduce carbon emissions.

Solid Waste Mascot Debut!

We're excited to announce that the newest buccaneer at the Solid Waste Division made his debut at the Hastings Holiday Parade this past Saturday, December 11!

He was joined by members of the St. Johns County Public Works Department as well as the Grinch, a festive Christmas float, some heavy equipment, and LOTS of candy!

We will hold a contest soon to officially name the new Solid Waste Mascot, so stay tuned!
