World AIDS Day - December 1
World AIDS Day was first observed in 1988 . Each year, organizations and individuals across the world bring attention to the HIV epidemic, endeavor to increase HIV awareness and knowledge, speak out against HIV stigma, and call for an increased response to move toward ending the HIV epidemic.

Access to Healthcare Network's Southern and Northern Nevada Ryan White teams had the privilege to attend community events in support of World AIDS Day. We are so proud of our community and other organizations that came together to increase HIV awareness and knowledge. Together we are moving toward ending the HIV epidemic.

Toys for Tots at AHN
'Tis the season of giving! This year our Reno office was a Toys for Tots drop off location. We successfully collected hundreds of toys from staff and community members to donate to the organization.

Last year, this exciting program received and distributed almost 200,000 toys across Washoe County for children ages 0-14 brightening the holidays for over 56,000 children across our county.

If you know of families who may be in need that are interested in requesting toys, they may apply directly at toysfortots.org.
Healthy Holiday Recipe
Roasted Butternut Squash Salad with Warm Cider Vinaigrette
Luck for us here at AHN, we have a team of dietitians to keep us on track through the holidays. Here is a healthy recipe from the Food Network our dietitians recommend with seasonal butternut squash.

Butternut squash is a form of winter squash that is low in calories and high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Just one cup of cooked butternut squash provides 7 grams of fiber, as well as more than 450% of the reference daily intake (RDI) for vitamin A and over 50% of the RDI for vitamin C - two vitamins that are important for immune health. Although butternut squash is often available year-round, it is best during the fall and winter months. For best results, look for a squash is heavy and has a hard skin and store in a cool, dark place prior to cutting.

Meet Our Team - Dan Davis, CFO
Dan Davis has been a part of AHN for almost two years serving as Chief Financial Officer. After several years of working for large national and international public accounting firms, Dan was drawn to the opportunity to be involved in an organization that treats every member of our community as an individual with an opportunity to grow beyond their circumstances and appreciates the value of the organization’s emphasis on shared responsibility and community wide partnerships.

Dan has over ten years of experience in finance and spent most of the past decade living outside Nevada before returning home to his roots. “I spent several years in Providence Rhode Island developing a love for the local culture of food, arts, and especially sports (New England sports Fans are truly unique in their fandom) but never quite getting over the climate before moving to San Francisco and learning to love big city life where I remained for several more years. After a brief stint in Australia that I could only describe as being the experience of a lifetime, I was faced with two equally great opportunities: one being to stay abroad working in business, which I enjoyed immensely or something completely unknown, working at a not for profit that was directly impacting the only place I’ve ever felt was truly ‘home’. Sometimes, you have to take a leap and in my case, the rest is history.

Every day I am thankful for the opportunity I was given to be here in this position with such an incredible organization, and work with people who inspire me as we all move forward together to break down barriers for our community’s access to healthcare."

Genetic-Testing Scams Have Targeted Seniors to Bill Medicare
A new wave of scammers have looked to capitalize on the newfound popularity of genetic testing. By focusing on less educated and older Americans, these scammers have been able to receive personal information in exchange for cheek swabs that would theoretically give them information on health risks. The scammers use this information to bill Medicare for a "Genetic Test" and get payouts from about $6,000-$9,000. Participants are found in low-income housing complexes, senior centers, and of course through Facebook ads.
