Ellen's Book Review

Ovidia Yu’s

Crown Colony series

A delightfully charming crime series (7 books so far) set in 1930s British Colonial Singapore, which is brought richly to life. Meet amateur sleuth Chen Su Lin, a local girl stepping in as governess for the Acting Governor of Singapore and “one of the most likeable heroines in modern literature” (SCOTSMAN).

“Simply glorious. Chen Su Lin is a true gem. Her slyly witty voice and her admirable, sometimes heartbreaking, practicality make her the most beguiling narrator heroine I've met in a long while” (Catriona McPherson).

These historical detective novels are best read in order to follow the timeline and Su Lin’s development and cases. Start with book 1 The Frangipani Tree Mystery, book 2 The Betel Nut Tree Mystery, and book 3 The Paper Bark Tree Mystery.

Gale Biography

When it comes to searching for knowledge, sometimes we need something more purely scholastic than Google. With two elementary children of my own, there will soon come a time when they will want to use the internet to find information for their school research assignments. As a parent, I want to help them but also let them take the wheel and feel confident of themselves in their research endeavors. Pebble Go is perfect for this! Pebble Go is a web based portal created for children, a safe space for them to search within. It has lists of famous people who children may be interested to learn about. Vocalization is available for children who need support with reading, and every button has a friendly voice that tells them what they are hovering over. Pebble Go is made for children to feel confident and helps them navigate very easily throughout the database, even providing buttons to copy the MLA citation for each webpage. I am excited to use this tool as a starting point for my kids to learn how to use the internet to do their research. To get to Pebble Go, you should go through Whelden’s Resources tab on the website, which will bypass any sign in process. You will be brought to the simple front page with two choices of what to research: Animals or People. From there, categories appear such as “Artists” or Amphibians”.I am so grateful that this resource exists and that Whelden has brought it to my attention!

Krampus! With Gregory Williams

Monday, December 4th

6:30pm

West Barnstable Community Building

The Christmas Season. Presents and candy, courtesy of Santa Claus.

For some naughty individuals, though, there is another possibility, involving consequences beyond a disappointing lump of coal in one's stocking. In the dark folkloric traditions of Germany and central Europe, Santa might be accompanied by an unwelcome, and alarming, colleague.

You better watch out. You better not cry.

This program is best suited for adults.
