What a semester!

Kidznotes welcomed 74 students to the Durham Nucleo and 35 Mozart students back to classes this fall — and they wasted no time diving in! All together, Kidznotes teaching artists provided 74 hours of music education to our students this semester. We are also grateful for the fantastic guest artists from Duke University, NC School of the Arts, and earspace who visited the Nucleo to coach, mentor, and share their talents with our students. It has been astounding to witness the progress our students have made as individuals and ensembles.

We are beaming with pride as we end 2023 and can't wait to show you what our Joy Machines can accomplish in 2024.

Q&A With El Sistema Grad

Kidznotes Teaching Artist Beideth Briceño

You were an El Sistema student in Venezuela — how did that experience impact you?

I am the person I am today because of the system; it had a profound impact on my life. Since the age of 10, my life revolved around it. It became my favorite daily activity!

What makes the El Sistema model of music education so special?

The system is based on the idea that any child can join; simply wanting to be a part of it is enough to be welcomed. Another special aspect of the system is orchestral practice: you belong to a group and have the blessing of making music together.

Now as a Teaching Artist, how do you see Kidznotes impacting our students?

Often, we don't fully grasp the impact that music has on a child… it is truly significant. Many of my El Sistema peers who did not pursue music professionally have become accomplished psychologists, architects, or lawyers. Yet, whenever I speak with them, they attribute their high-level professionalism in their respective fields to the discipline and love for music that the system instilled in them.
