Oneida County Reentry Task Force grant program (RTF) and Building Pathways to Infrastructure Careers grant program Success

By WDB RTF Program Director Jeremy Esch and WDB Building Pathways to Infrastructure Careers grant Program Director Sarah Barcomb

"R" started with RTF as a recently released justice-involved individual. He arrived at his first meeting with RTF with a “take charge” attitude and got right to work with RTF Program Director Jeremy Esch identifying and working on his stabilization needs.

"During their discussions Jeremy realized that with "R's" background and career goals he would be a good match for MVCC's entry level machinist course, but unfortunately the class had started a few days prior. Jeremy reached out to the Building Pathways to Infrastructure Careers grant Program Director Sarah Barcomb who contacted MVCC and got permission for him to join!

"R" completed the necessary steps to join the Building Pathways to Infrastructure Jobs grant program right away. He was a little hesitant to start a class so quickly after his release, but he gave it some thought and then jumped right in.

"He’s progressing well in the class and RTF continues to work on helping him get his ID and other goals. We'll be celebrating his completion of the program this month! "R" is interested in gaining employment in the machining world as well as taking advantage of any other opportunities afforded to him. We expect great things out of this go-getter!”

Congratulations, "R"!

Pathway Home 2 (PH2) Grant Program Success

By PH2 Director Patricia A. Frazier

"We would like to highlight program participant Bailah. Bailah was enrolled in the PH2 grant program in April 2024. He was homeless and living at the Rescue Mission emergency shelter after being released from State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). After several weeks of living in the Rescue Mission emergency shelter, Bailah was moved to the Parker House.

"Bailah was very persistent in working to better himself. While enrolled in the WDB's RTF grant program he completed Ready, Set, Work and Interactive Journaling classes. Once he completed those classes, he enrolled in the OSHA 30 training class and an Asbestos Handler class, which he completed in May.

"The PH2 team then arranged an interview with a local construction company. Bailah secured a position and started in June. Bailah has excelled at the company, already achieving a raise.

"Unfortunately, Bailah lost his housing at the Parker House because of his employment. Still homeless he was moved back to the Rescue Mission emergency shelter, but that did not stop him. He continued working and was able to secure a one-bedroom apartment the first week of September.

"The PH2 team wants to congratulate Bailah for all his hard work. He can also be a beacon for others, that if you want something different you must work hard to do something different."

Congratulations, Bailah!

Career Pathways III (CPIII) Grant Program Success

By CPIII Program Director Mary Kris Smith

"CPIII participant Adrian was enrolled in the Oneonta Job Corps Academy (OJCA) Advanced Training-Electrical Overhead Line Construction program where, in addition to earning his advanced trade credential, he also completed his OSHA-30 certificate prior to graduating from OJCA.

"Before attending OJCA, Adrian earned an Electrical Pre-Apprentice certificate at Job Corps in San Diego, CA. He held a leadership position as Shop Foreman, a designation he was proud to hold. Adrian earned several other certifications as part of his basic and advanced training, including CPR & First Aid, OSHA-10 and Safety Capstan Hoist Operation, among other industry/trade certificates.

"Adrian enjoys working outside and prefers physical labor. After graduating from OJCA, he accepted an entry-level position as a Ground Hand with a telecommunications contractor in South Central Pennsylvania.

"Adrian likes his job and expects to be offered a promotion to Lineman in the very near future. Though he loves this work, he also aspires to one day pursue a degree in Education and go on to become a teacher.

"While participating in the Career Pathways III program, Adrian achieved all of our program’s milestones: Career Plan/Attendance, Two Credentials, Employment, 60- and 120-Day Job Retention."

Congratulations, Adrian!
