Traditions & Warm Hospitality Since 1892

A Note from Keith

As the year winds down and the holiday season ushers in a time of joy and togetherness, it's the perfect time to pause and reflect on our shared journey in 2023. This season is about more than just festive cheer; it's a valuable opportunity to express our deep gratitude and acknowledge each and every member as a vital part of GCC’s success. It has been our privilege to serve you this past year, and we hope that each experience at the Club has been exceptional.

While we focus not only on creating meaningful experiences for our members, their families, and guests, we also work on developing our own internal work family. We invest in passionate, high-performing team members who embrace our values, fuel our growth, and want to be part of our success. Each dedicated staff member at GCC, including those behind the scenes, takes pride in the quality of service they provide to you. I want to thank our team for an extraordinary year of hard work and professional growth while providing remarkable hospitality and service.

We look forward to seeing you at the many festivities planned for December, and on behalf of the Greenwich Country Club staff, I wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season!

Sincerely,

Keith Armstrong

Culinary

GCC is thrilled to announce that Certified Master Chef Kevin Walker, CMC, one of the 85 Certified Master Chefs worldwide, will join our team as a special culinary guest for the 2023 Governors Ball.

 Over the past few weeks, Chef Kevin has been collaborating with our culinary team to create extraordinary food for the Governors Ball. He will continue to work with our dedicated team throughout the week of the event, where he will actively participate in preparations and cooking during the evening.

 As a Certified Master Chef, Chef Kevin brings unparalleled expertise and experience to the table. The American Master Chef certification is one of the most grueling culinary tests, spanning ten hours daily over ten days and highlighting his culinary competence, knowledge, and skills. We can't wait to see the culinary creations that Chef Kevin and our Interim Chef and Senior Sous Chef, Jeremy Bergeron, alongside our two talented sous chefs, Addison Ambriola and Rodger McDonald, and the complete culinary brigade will come up with together. We are confident their partnership will build upon our team's strong foundation and elevate the dining experience during the Governors Ball.

 We invite you to savor this extraordinary culinary journey with us and look forward to delighting your palate with the exquisite creations of Chef Kevin Walker and our dedicated culinary team.

One of 85 Certified Master Chefs and the Executive Chef at Ansley Golf Club, Walker actively seeks highly motivated culinarians to prepare exceptional cuisine using high-quality products consistently. The result is surprising, creative fare yet always familiar, an ideal complement to all culinary aspects of the club. Recently retired, Chef Walker has had quite a culinary journey over his 44-year career, beginning at The Arizona Biltmore and ending at Ansley Golf Club. He is the current President of The American Master Chefs Order.

TRACKMAN ARTICLE

by Michael Mancz, Assistant Golf Professional

Let’s imagine for a minute you have just booked your first appointment in our new Golf Learning Center. We get you all set up on the Trackman driving range, you hit your first shot, and out comes a bunch of different numbers. You stand there and think to yourself, “What the heck does this all mean?”

With technology becoming a staple in today’s golf instruction, it is easy to get overwhelmed by the confusing jargon you often hear and see. Terms like “club path” or “face angle”, while simple in nature, can seem confusing or unclear.

My goal with this article is to give you a good starting place when practicing indoors. I believe that by looking at these three parameters (data points) you will gain a better understanding of why your golf ball is doing what it is doing.

Are you ready? If so, let’s dive in!

TRACKMAN 1

TRACKMAN 2

Club Path

Trackman Definition: The in-to-out or out-to-in movement of the club head’s geometric center at the time of maximum compression.

Another way to say this is that at impact, the club is either traveling out to the right or out to the left. When you hear phrases like “swing more from the inside” or “swinging over-the-top”, this is what it is in reference to. On Trackman (for a right-handed golfer), when you hit a shot that reads a positive value, it means you swung the club from the inside the target line, or it is moving to the right of the target. If your shot reads a negative value, it means you swung from outside the target line, or the club is moving to the left of the target. This number, combined with what the face is doing at impact, will determine how your golf ball will curve.

Face Angle

Trackman Definition:  The horizontal club face orientation at the center-point of contact between the club-face and golf ball at the maximum compression of the golf ball.

Just think of this as the direction the club-face pointed is pointed at impact. In relation to the number (for a right-handed golfer) that will show up, a club-face that was pointed right will produce a positive value, while a negative value means the club-face was pointed to the left. It is important to remember that Face Angle is the main determinant to whether your ball starts out to the right or left of the target.

When looking at this number along with Club Path, to produce a shot that draws, you want a face angle number that is lower (pointed more left) in value than the club path. Vice versa for a fade, in which you would want a face angle number that is higher (pointed more right) in value than the club path. If you want to change how your ball curves, this is a major component.

Attack Angle

Trackman Definition: The vertical direction of the club head’s geometric center movement at maximum compression of the golf ball

Simply put, this refers to whether the club travels up or down at impact. It is easiest to relate this number to the different clubs in your bag. A negative Attack Angle value means that you were striking down on the golf ball, while a positive number means you were hitting up on it. As you look at the different clubs in your bag, each one will be slightly different in this number. Generally speaking, the highest lofted clubs in your bag will read the most negative, while your driver will read the most positive. This means you want to hit more down on your irons and more up on your driver.

~~~~~~
Well, there you have it! Three of my favorite Trackman parameters to look at when hitting golf balls. I always use these numbers, along with distance measurement, in all of my lessons. They help to guide the player and/or coach into understanding why a golf ball is doing what it is doing. Please keep in mind that in order for these numbers to accurately reflect what is happening, the Trackman unit needs to be calibrated correctly to the proper target line. This is where we Golf Professionals come in!
With that said, I hope this helps introduce you to the wonderful world of Trackman with a sense of understanding.
Be on the lookout for another article next month. In the meantime, have a wonderful holiday season and we look forward to seeing you in the new Golf Learning Center soon!
Skeet Awards Dinner
On the evening of Friday, November 17th, the highly anticipated awards dinner hosted by GCC was held, welcoming fellow shooters from Riverside Yacht Club. The event was a resounding success, boasting the highest attendance in recent memory.
The festivities were filled with mouth-watering cuisine, outstanding awards, and much laughter, making it an evening to remember. Witnessing so many supporters for the occasion left a lasting impression on all who attended.
Interclub Competition
GCC recently hosted Riverside Yacht Club for its first interclub event of the season. The competition between the two clubs takes place twice each season, and the winner of the year is determined by the combined score of both events. The team score is the total score of the top 5 shooters for each club. For the past five seasons, GCC had held the silver tournament plate in the skeet house, but it was lost to RYC last year. However, GCC is well on its way to reclaiming the title. The two clubs will compete again on February 25th at Ten Mile River Preserve.
Be sure to check out the Skeet & Trap Interclub Event Signups on the GCC app!
Twelve GCC shooters participated in the event, and the highest-scoring shooters for GCC were Randy Weisenburger, David Ruf, Christian Ruf, John Kramer, and Pete Lescoe. Their combined scores led to a 373 to 349 win for GCC.
