Record-Breaking Low Unemployment Five Months in a Row. For the fifth straight month, Louisiana has set a new record for the lowest unemployment rate in state history, down to 3.3% unemployment. It’s always great to be able to lead into the holidays with some good news, and last week, our office announced, once again, that Louisiana's unemployment rate has broken records. This is the fifth month in a row we have set a new unemployment rate in state history, and Louisiana's unemployment rate is now significantly lower than the national rate. Last week, Gov. Edwards signed a formal apology to the families of two Southern University students killed 50 years ago, Leonard Brown and Denver Smith, as well as the nine student leaders whose lives were also deeply impacted. On November 16, 1972, Brown and, both just twenty years old, were senselessly and unjustly killed when a law enforcement officer, who has never been identified or prosecuted, fired into a crowd of students fleeing from tear gas. As the Governor said, “.. it is right and just for Louisiana to try to make amends. In those dark times, our State failed to uphold its highest ideals.”

 World Institute on Disability

The Health Equity Project Team at the World Institute on Disability (WID) is pleased to share a series of disability and health equity training modules! The training modules may be accessed through the WID website or through YouTube. Links to both options are included below.

The videos can all be found on our WID website at the following link: https://wid.org/strategies-for-equitable-access-to-vaccinations-and-inclusive-disaster-response-doh/

Book of the Month:

Demystifying Disability

What to Know, What to Say,

and How to be an Ally

Authored by celebrated disability rights advocate, speaker, and writer Emily Ladau, this practical, intersectional guide offers all readers a welcoming place to understand disability as part of the human experience

People with disabilities are the world’s largest minority, an estimated 15 percent of the global population. But many of us—disabled and nondisabled alike—don’t know how to act, what to say, or how to be an ally to the disability community. Demystifying Disability is a friendly handbook on the important disability issues you need to know about, including:

• How to appropriately think, talk, and ask about disability

• Recognizing and avoiding ableism (discrimination toward disabled people)

• Practicing good disability etiquette

• Ensuring accessibility becomes your standard practice, from everyday communication to planning special events

• Appreciating disability history and identity

• Identifying and speaking up about disability stereotypes in media
