December 8th is the 125th Anniversary James Thurber's Birth
Collected Fables by James Thurber

"James Thurber was a comedic genius. His fables are not simply parodies of Aesop. They are wry, accurate, and powerful reflections of ourselves, our foibles, our follies, and, above all, our self-importance. And they are very, very funny." —Neil Gaiman

James Thurber has been called “one of the world’s greatest humorists” by Alistair Cooke ( The   Atlantic ), and “one of our great American institutions” (Stanley Walker)—and few works reveal Thurber’s genius as powerfully as his fables. Perennially entertaining and astutely satirical, Thurber pinpricks the idiosyncrasies of life with verbal frivolity, hilarious insights, political shrewdness, and, of course, quirky, quotable morals.

Now, readers can savor 85 fables by the twentieth century’s preeminent humorist collected for the first time in a single anthology. Here,  Fables for Our Time, Further Fables for Our Time,  and ten previously uncollected fables—illustrated by ten contemporary artists including Seymour Chwast, Mark Ulriksen, Laurie Rosenwald, and R. O. Blechman—are presented in  Collected Fables,  a must-have for readers of all ages.

Evie's dream is to become a screenwriter, but she can't even manage to get a promotion to agent. Her big break might be on the way, though, when she strikes a bargain with big-name screenwriter Ezra to prove to him that rom-coms are real and worth writing. With the help of her new friend/critic Ben and his daughter Anette, Evie arranges her own meet-cutes and sends Ezra summaries of her experiences, with the ultimate goal of falling in love like they do in the movies. The Last Train to London by Meg Waite Clayton

I read a lot of historical fiction, but this quickly climbed to the top of my favorites list. The majority of WWII fiction revolves around the camps, but this gave a new perspective - the kindertransports system, run by Truus, a woman unable to bear children herself who is determined to get all of the Jewish children safely out of Austria. It's one of those rare books with multiple storylines that keeps you engrossed in every single page, and leaves you in awe of the people who fought not only for their own lives, but for the lives of every single person that they possibly could. This book will keep you hooked until the final page, and will make you hold the kids in your life a bit more tightly.

All the Greys on Greene Street by Laura Tucker

It had been a while since I'd read a middle grade book, but I could not have loved All the Greys on Greene Street more. Sweet, funny, heartbreaking, and healing, it tells the story of Olympia, the daughter of artists who doesn't know what to do when her dad disappears overnight and her mom stops getting out of bed. It's hard to believe that this is a debut. With the honest charm that comes with a twelve-year-old narrator, this book delivered in every area - great characters, a bit of mystery, beautiful writing, and a realistic look at mental illness. A great read for anyone of any age.

The Broken Road by Peggy Wallace Kennedy

The Broken Road is an incredibly honest memoir from the daughter of George Wallace, Peggy Wallace Kennedy. She gives her view of her father's life, political struggles, and personal values. Kennedy also details how she came to a heightened awareness about the hurt her father caused so many with his stand against desegregation. A must-read for those who are interested in Southern history, politics, and the civil rights era.

Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts

Finding Dorothy is a fascinating novel about the life of Maud Baum, wife of L. Frank Baum, who wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The novel alternates between Maud's life story and her later friendship with Judy Garland on the set of The Wizard of Oz . Elizabeth Letts' bases her novel on historical fact and research but still puts together a very readable book will very real characters.

The remote coast of New Zealand and the small town of Gold Cover were the perfect setting for exploring how well people really know each other and what secrets they are hiding when a popular, well liked, and beautiful young girl goes missing. Will Gallagher, the police chief, is an outsider who is happy with his demotion and banishment to this small town because he believes he failed in his last case. Anahera Rawiri is a Maori native who left town as soon as she became an adult, only to return 8 years later to try and find solace after her life in London is shattered. Who knew there could be so many people in such a small town with so many secrets? Beautiful writing, interesting characters, and edge of your seat suspense in a setting that is wild, dangerous and unpredictable! What could be better?

Berkley 2019  - Format: Hardcover - Price: $27.00

The Lying Game by Ruth Ware

The Lying Game is not so much a thriller as it is a mystery which gives us an intense look at the lives of 4 young teens who happened to find each other when they were the most vulnerable, needy and alone. They met for the first time at a boarding school almost by accident when one of the girls lied to a headmistress to protect one of the other students she had just met. The four quickly became close friends and continued their lying as part of a so called ‘lying game’. Their innocence, if there ever was any, was totally gone by the end of their first year when they are forced to leave the school because of a scandal. In addition to what they were supposedly involved in they also end up helping in the covering up of a death never realizing how it would affect their future. The Lying Game is a beautifully written story of love, betrayal and guilt. It is also a story of hope, selflessness, and sacrifice.

Trace of Evil by Alice Blanchard

Trace of Evil unfolds in a sleepy tourist town near the Adirondack Mountains, in upstate New York. The tourist flock to see where 3 local witches were supposedly killed in the days of the witch hunts and Salem witch trials. Because of the ties to witches there has always been an interest in the occult and black magic and satanism and the town has cashed in on this to promote tourism. But on the whole it is a sweet town, where everyone knows his neighbors, and where everyone knows the secrets that this little town harbors. There is still teenage dabbling with the occult just like when Detective Natalie Lockhart was in school, there are troubled marriages just waiting for the trouble to bubble to the surface, and there is murder… too much murder… some solved, some unsolved, some cold cases and some new. As a new hire Natalie is given the cold case of the missing nine and is determined to help find out what happened to these girls over the years. Then comes a new murder – one very close to home - and Natalie has to separate her professional instincts from the personal feelings she has for the suspects. There is a lot more than a trace of evil hiding in this tiny town as you will discover when the shocking ending is revealed.

Minotaur Books 2019  - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.99

The Lying Room by Nicci French

The problem with telling lies is that you have to remember what lies you tell and keep them straight. Neve keeps reminding herself of this as she scrubs the flat clean so no one will know she was having an affair while the dead body of her boss and her lover lies in the other room. About the only thing that isn’t a lie when she finally talks to the police is that she didn’t kill Saul and doesn’t know who did. The story became almost slapstick as Neve takes care of her family, fixes meals, checks homework, entertains friends who never go home, and feeds the guinea pig all the while trying to figure out how to keep herself and her daughter Mabel out of jail. She keeps hiding and re-hiding the hammer, which was the murder weapon, and which her daughter stole from the flat in a misguided effort to protect Neve since she followed Neve to the flat and thought Neve had killed Saul. Soon the hammer disappears completely and Neve realizes that the murderer has to be someone she knows. While she continues being the rock that everyone depends on, Neve frantically tries to figure out who could have killed Saul. It is hard to find something comical about a person being brutally murdered but Neve was one of the most amusing characters I have ever encountered. I just wish I had half of her energy and her quick wit and ability to keep the lies coming and coming without tangling herself up.
