California Wine Country
|
|
In early October we returned from a two week journey to California – Napa & Sonoma Valleys and San Francisco. It was two weeks filled with visits to wineries, travelling country roads, eating wonderful food and meeting interesting and friendly people.
This journey began in the spring of 2018 when we began to have conversations with friends and fellow wine enthusiasts. We consulted with Paulette McLin of Holiday Cruises & Tours, and through her research, Ellen Kieval of Wine and Dine Events in Napa was contacted. What a find!! Cross country conversations, questions, planning and more conversations led to an itinerary of epic proportions. Our tours included a winery where 21st century technology was combined with old world techniques to a small, family owned vineyard where the owner and CFO (Chief Forklift Operator) was involved with the harvest.
|
|
Our Napa Valley experience was anchored in Yountville. It is a small town with restaurants, tasting rooms and shopping, all in walking distance. During the day we had a driver to motor us to wineries, restaurants, and activities (cooking class, farmers’ market, sporting clay shooting, spas); our driver was Chris and as a local, he was an invaluable source of information, local tales and history.
Healdsburg in Sonoma Valley was our headquarters. Again a small town with galleries, tasting rooms, restaurants. Unlike Napa, food is available at some Sonoma wineries and we thoroughly enjoyed the vineyard dining experience.
People have asked about the highlights of our trip – gorgeous vistas, wonderful wine & food, memorable people ?? I’m not choosing!

Lewis and Clark River Cruise
Earlier this month, my husband, Bruce, and I took a paddlewheel cruise out in Oregon and Washington with American Cruise Lines. We started in Spokane, Washington and traveled down the Snake and Columbia Rivers, following the route that was forged by Lewis and Clark more than 200 years ago.
|
|
As we sailed through the Columbia River Gorge we stopped at small towns along the way. Richland, The Dalles, Astoria, and others were some of the places we visited. Daily shore excursions were part of the cruise and enabled us to visit several museums, the Bonneville Dam, the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, and more. One of our favorite excursions was our visit to Mount St. Helens, the volcano that had erupted in 1980. Because it had snowed earlier in the month we were able to see snow on Mount St. Helens and other parts of the Cascade Mountain Range.
|
|
Several of the small towns where we docked were in walking distance from the ship so we were able to explore them on foot. Meals and snacks were included as part of the cruise, but we often chose to eat lunch in these ports to get a taste of the local culture. The ship had a program called “Farm To Table” where they purchased cheese, seafood, fruits, vegetable, and other foods from local producers. Two of our favorites were the silver salmon and the huckleberry ice cream. This program provides a way for passengers to experience the flavors of the Pacific Northwest.
|
|
Our ship, The American Pride, had a local historian who stayed onboard during the entire cruise. As we sailed down the river he gave daily talks about Lewis & Clark and their adventures. By the end of the week we knew more about Meriwether Lewis and James Clark that we ever could have imagined!
We enjoyed our river cruise and definitely will look forward to planning another one soon, maybe down the Mississippi River or up in the northeast. Our travel agent, Lenny Kopple, always assists us in planning wonderful cruises regardless of where we go in the world.

Elf the Musical is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy’s enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, discover his true identity, and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. This modern day Christmas classic is sure to make everyone embrace their inner Elf.

Whistler is a town north of Vancouver, British Columbia, that's home to Whistler Blackcomb, one of the largest ski resorts in North America. Besides skiing and snowboarding, the area offers snowshoeing, tobogganing and ski jumping at the Olympic Park, a venue for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. The hub of Whistler is a compact, chalet-style pedestrian village at the base of Whistler and
Blackcomb mountains.

Brad Baldwin
is the best. Can't thank him enough for all he has done for all the 'vacations' he has put together for us.

We booked this cruise directly with Viking Cruises and turned it over to
Paulette McLin
for final handling. Even though we booked our own flights, Paulette went over and above the call of duty to help in coordinating our connecting return flight from Atlanta to Tallahassee when there was a ground stop at Atlanta. It caused us to miss our original flight on Delta. She contacted the limousine service and advised them of the 4 + hour delay and change in arrival time. The complimentary limo service was greatly appreciated. Skip and Craig were on time, polite and very helpful. This was a great benefit provided by your agency and speaks highly of your services.

, we had a fantastic time on Royal Caribbean’s “Jewel of the Seas” on our 7 night Greek Island Cruise. We had 11 people, from age 13-76 and this cruise was perfect for teenagers and adults. Our excursions were outstanding and all of the transportation logistics for our large group went smoothly. All the kids are anxious to plan their next cruise! Thanks for planning this for us!

This place is awesome! We are having the best time. The mountain wasn’t out today but we saw 8 grizzly bears and a bunch of others. Sitting down for dinner at Appenglow/Grand Denali. Looking forward to the train tomorrow. Thanks!

Ms.
Chynell Jefferson
was very professional and personable. We appreciated her timely response to our questions. All of our concerns were answered by telephone or written correspondence. We were very much intrigued about the possibility of experiencing a Disney cruise and it was a dream come true. We enjoyed the trip and we are looking forward to another opportunity to experience another Disney trip.
