"Fighting for Joy in Christ
In a World of Depression and Anxiety"

This year we explore the challenges that we face as we fight to maintain our joy in Christ ...within a broken world and within our own brokenness. Just in the last decade, there has been a rapid increase of depression and anxiety. We can all recognize that in a world of grief, stress, disease, and brokenness, we have much to be anxious and depressed about. But as Christians, we have a secure hope that presses us into a deep joy that no present reality can unhinge. The church, therefore, should be the most influential and safe place for anyone suffering with depression and anxiety. As a church, we will stretch our understanding to the reality of our fallen bodies and minds, and rest our hearts in the promises of a God that meets us in the valleys of our depression and anxiety. For the Christian, spiritual joy is a companion to suffering that must be pursued. After all, this is the "already, but not yet."

Schedule
January 9: 6pm - 7:30pm - "Christians Get Depressed Too: Hope and Help for the Depressed"
(Guest Speaker:
Dr. David Murray )

Our programs on these 4 Wednesday nights will begin earlier and run a bit later. It will be important for parents of those children in nursery or children's ministry to pick their children up at 7:30-7:35pm.

Begins Wednesday, January 9
10am-12pm in Fellowship Hall

This semester focuses on the NT books of Acts through Revelation. We will be looking at the church, the bride of Christ. It may be difficult to read each of the books in a week's time. It is helpful, however, to skim through the book prior to class. Unless otherwise noted, we will present an overview of the key concepts in each book as they relate to the history of God's plan of salvation. If you are interested in studying the Bible in a structured and systematic way, then this is the class for you! Our Bethel Discipleship community is a diverse group of learners encompassing adults of all ages. To sign up for this semester, please contact Phyllis Pemerton ( ppemerton@bellsouth.net) or  the Church Office.

Mission Spotlight: Nate & Shana Mast

This is an excerpt from the Mast's newsletter. For an unedited copy, please email  nataliep@fpcrome.org . Please consider sending the Masts emails of encouragement:

I now understand the depth of sorrow that comes alongside losing a baby before getting to hold them in my arms. Before now, I didn't quite get it...I wasn't sure how to comfort or mourn with friends who had miscarriages.

The immediate and intense connection a mom feels upon knowing there's a baby growing inside her; The joy that is stripped away and replaced with grief; the physical pain that is a constant reminder of loss...all of these being hardships that a miscarriage brings. We are praying for God to guide us in how to grieve and how to move forward. Its times like these that makes the distance from our families most difficult. However, we are thankful for our Nairobi friends and community who have comforted us through hospital visits, meals and prayer. Continue to pray for us as we process our loss and lean on the Lord, who is faithful, loves us and hears our cries.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.  For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.
