Research Tip:
Boolean Operator Basics

Searching databases but not finding what you're looking for? Using Boolean operators can help focus your search to produce results better fitting your topic.

Boolean operators connect your search terms together to tell the search engine specifically what you need. The three basic operators are AND, OR and NOT.

AND tells the database that all terms must be present, narrowing your search.
OR broadens your results, telling the database any of the search terms can be present.
NOT excludes terms from the results, narrowing your search. (If using a search engine like Google or Bing, use the - symbol before the search term. Example: -gingerbread.)
Try using the three basic Boolean operators next time you conduct a database or Google Scholar search. You'll be much happier with the results!
