Message from the

Mayor and City Council

As the end of the year approaches, we asked the Mayor and City Council to share their favorite holiday traditions with us.

Jeff Lambson: One of our favorite things to do throughout the holiday season is to watch our favorite Christmas movies. We also love playing games around the table or in the family room. In both cases, we have our favorites but are always on the lookout for new contenders.

Debby Lauret: This year marks the 35th year our family has created a gingerbread house for the Festival of Trees. We come together as an extended family to put gingerbread and candy together over the Thanksgiving weekend. The house we create is seen by thousands during the event and is auctioned off to raise money for Primary Children’s Hospital. This year’s house is from “Encanto.”

Tom Macdonald: My favorite holiday tradition is having the kids and grandkids over to reenact the manger scene. It was a tradition started by my wife’s parents, and we have enjoyed being part of it now for several decades.

Terry Peterson: I sit down with the family and read the New Testament about the Savior’s birth. We act it out with children, and now grandchildren, playing the parts. Because of five daughters and 14 granddaughters, there is a battle on who gets to be Mary each year. It’s a very spiritual time for me and my family.

LaNae Millett: One of our family's favorite traditions happens on Christmas Eve. We have dinner by glowing candlelight--the table is covered with a red tablecloth, Christmas decor, good food, and several lit candles. We laugh together as we share cherished memories and blessings of years past, and we make a wish for the coming year as we each blow out our candles. We read the account of Christ's birth from the New Testament, then sip hot chocolate as we watch a favorite Christmas movie together.

David Spencer: I look forward to helping my wife Julie make popcorn balls and deliver them to all the Police and Fire employees. We appreciate everything they do to protect and keep our community safe.

Dave Young: Our favorite traditions include my wife making a tree for the Festival of Trees, taking the kids and grandkids to Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point, and the Christmas Eve family party at my parents’ house.

We wish you all the best during this holiday season. Whether you are celebrating long-held traditions or creating new ones, cherish this time spent with friends, family, and community.

City Happenings

Community Caroling

Save the date for this annual event to celebrate loved ones who have passed. Monday, December 19, 6:00 pm at the Orem Cemetery.

Sing Christmas Carols and enjoy some hot chocolate! Bring a special ornament to hang on the Christmas tree in memory of your loved one.

The holiday season can be especially difficult for those who have lost loved ones. You are not alone in your suffering. Come be uplifted by others and the spirit of Christmas.

Food Drive

Community food drive in honor of Mero the Mammoth's birthday. Not only will your donation help the community, but it will also get you in for free at the Orem Family Fitness Center anytime on December 10th.

The food bank is in need of canned proteins, fruit cups, breakfast cereal, and seasonings like salt, pepper, cinnamon, and seasoning packets but any type of non-perishable food is welcome.

Orem's Tour of Lights

What was intended to be a small and temporary bright spot in the dark days of COVID has turned into a beloved Orem holiday tradition now in its 3rd year.

The Orem Tour of Lights is back and the form is open to start adding addresses. If you have a holiday display you want to show off, add your address to the list. Please alert your friends and neighbors with excellent displays to do the same.

Just visit orem.org/lights to get started. We'll publish the first version of the list on Dec. 8th.

Library Programs & Events

The Orem Public Library has a festive line-up of Holiday Concerts planned throughout December. The concert series will feature some of the best musical performing groups in the area and is a great way to get that holiday feeling into your life. All of the concerts are held at 7pm in Library Hall. Just check the library calendar for dates and performer details.
