You likely have at least one shop steward at your workplace, and hopefully they were introduced to you when you were hired! Shop Stewards receive training from the union, help support and stand up for their coworkers at work, assist with grievances and make sure your employer follows the word of your contract, while still doing the regular tasks of their job.
The best union education happens when workers pass along tips and information to each other. You should feel comfortable approaching your stewards with questions, concerns and ideas. Stewards help make collective bargaining agreements meaningful by helping co-workers implement their contract and defend their rights on a day-to-day basis. They are in a unique position to understand co-workers’ concerns and priorities and communicate their priorities to other union leaders. They are also helpful with educating you about our union’s goals. We are always more powerful together and appreciate the expertise and dedication of our shop stewards - thank you!
Let your Union Representative know if you are interested in becoming a shop steward.
