Dear Friends of the BABC,  
2017 will go down as a year of great progress mixed with great sadness for our organization and community.  We continued to grow and had a record year, but we also suffered the passing of our beloved Chairman Colin Brown.  Colin's presence, smile, good humor and thoughtfulness are sorely missed by all of us.  Malini, Callum and Euan, we continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers and know you will all forever be a part of the BABC Community.
It was wonderful to see director Lucy Feltham at the BABC Christmas Luncheon following her terrible biking accident back in August.  Lucy, we all send you our best wishes for a continued speedy recovery and look forward to seeing you often in 2018.
We also keep the victims of the California wildfires in our thoughts and prayers.
Our 54th Annual BABC Christmas Luncheon brought over 1000 of us and our guests together to celebrate this time honored tradition.  I'd like to thank each and everyone of you that joined us and especially, all the VIP Sponsors and Prize Donors who make this event the  most prestigious holiday gathering in San Francisco each year.  Photos and video are below.
We have two events upcoming in early 2018.  Please mark your calendars and save the date for Wednesday, January 31st 2018 for another BABC flagship event, our 28th Annual BABC Economic Forecast Luncheon at The City Club.  Also, our annual Funding, Exits and IPO's event at the Quadrus Center in Menlo Park will be held on February 28th, 2018.  These events always sell out quickly so please don't delay in registering to avoid disappointment.  Tickets go on sale January 2nd.

From The Consul General's Desk

Dear Friends and Members of the BABC,
I hope you all are enjoying the holiday season This month I'd like to take the opportunity to discuss the release of the Government's Industrial Strategy.
The Industrial Strategy sets out a long term plan to boost the productivity and earning power of people throughout the UK.
It explains how we are building a Britain fit for the future - how we will help businesses create better, higher-paying jobs in every part of the UK with investment in the skills, industries and infrastructure of the future.
While all aspects of the Strategy are incredibly important (from clean growth, ageing, and future of mobility) and each will do tremendous things to each general area, I am very excited to see artificial intelligence included in the strategy. Not only is AI a very timely topic - it comes up in many of my conversations, but it's also a space that will continue to revolutionize the way we live in ways we cannot yet even imagine.
AI's potential is already well known: by one estimate it will add $309.9 billion to the UK economy by 2030. The UK is a recognized world leader in developing AI. Deepmind, Babylon and Swiftkey - which was backed by Innovate UK - are all globally renowned companies.
As part of the Industrial Strategy, the Government and the Artificial Intelligence sector have agreed a Sector Deal to boost the UK's global position as a leader in developing AI technologies.
Taking immediate, tangible actions to advance our AI and data-driven economy Grand Challenge, this deal will anchor the UK as the go-to destination for AI innovation and investment.

Unlocking the Commercial Potential of VR and AR

On Wednesday November 15th the BABC hosted the "Unlocking the commercial potential of VR and AR at the stunning Silicon Foundry offices in the heart of San Francisco. The event was sponsored by Penningtons Manches, Grant Thornton, Silicon Valley Bank and the Royal Bank of Scotland and proved to be a fantastic success with over 50 attendees.  
The event began with a hour for introductions and networking, with attendees being able to experience VR technology first hand thanks to demonstrations from Portico studios and Baobab studios.

Finlay James Opens in San Francisco

Global IT sales and digital recruitment company Finlay James, headed up by John and Sara Gaughan, has announced the opening of their first overseas office in Downtown San Francisco on the 2nd November 2017.

Following a record breaking year for the company and growth in global revenues of 17% plus two successful trips to San Francisco in February and September, Finlay James has brought forward the opening of their US office by two months to further serve growing technology companies either based in or with satellite offices in the US.

Norwegian Expands US Network with Flights to Madrid, Amsterdam and Milan

Norwegian, the airline awarded the World's Best Low-Cost Long-Haul Airline and Airline of the Year 2017 distinctions, today announced it will launch four new routes from the United States to Europe: New York City/JFK and Los Angeles to Madrid, Spain; New York City/JFK to Amsterdam, the Netherlands; and Los Angeles to Milan, Italy. Norwegian will be the only airline operating year-round nonstop flights from Los Angeles to Madrid and Milan.

Norwegian now offers 61 nonstop transatlantic routes to 16 European destinations. The airline now offers nonstop year-round routes to more European destinations from both the greater New York City area and Los Angeles, respectively.

UK Secretary of State for International Trade Dr. Liam Fox and United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer are pleased to announce the conclusion of the second meeting of the U.S.-UK Trade and Investment Working Group (the Working Group) in London.
