…a weary world rejoices.
When we live with hope, it changes how we live.
The essence of hopelessness is, “Things will never change, I will never change, it will always be this way.”
There is a lot of hopelessness in our world right now, a lot of fear, doubt, and suspicion. As Christians we shine like lights against a dark backdrop.
Recently my sons Eli and Theo made a Christmas tree out of wood and hung lights on it. Every night before going to bed I turn them off. Before I do, I take a brief moment to look at how the lights shine in the darkness and I think, “That is how we should shine as believers, like lights on a Christmas tree.”
Hope is NOT
“Hang in there, maybe things will get better if you try harder or wait long enough.”
Hope IS
“We have a God who promises to make things better, to make things different.”
Hebrews 6:11-20:
“And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises… And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise… we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf…”
This Christmas season, take hold of hope, take hold of Jesus.
Our hope is not in our circumstances, it is despite them. This has been a hard year for all of us, what a time for us to look forward in hope and fix our eyes on Jesus. One more verse:
Lamentations 3:21-23:
“But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
