The Annual General Meeting Wraps Up the Year
On Tuesday, December 13th we hosted our 2021 - 2022 Annual General Meeting.

Board Chair, Myke Healy welcomed guests and provided an overview of the year which he called The Year of Struggle
COVID-19 continued to cause numerous challenges, including cancelled school trips as well as a brief one-week closure of the camp during the summer. A big storm called a “Derecho” swept through the camp, toppling over 600 trees and damaging 14 buildings. Thanks to the tremendous, hard work of our staff, neighbours, and volunteers, we were able to clear the debris in time for the opening of Summer Camp 2022. And with the remarkable leadership of Cathy Romano, our Healthcare Coordinator, we navigated the challenges raised by COVID, operating a safe and vibrant camp which children so desperately needed.
Myke also noted that this year $300,000.00 in-kind value, was donated to Camp Kawartha! That is a lot of volunteer hours -and generous contributions of materials from individuals, groups, organizations, and corporations!!
Thomas Unrau, of the Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) was our guest speaker this year and he provided a fascinating overview of KLT’s land stewardship plans. He made the important point that the ‘land’ has stories – we all need to have a positive connection to natural spaces. KLT is working on finding ways to protect and enhance natural places both in the city and the county. KLT is focused on collaboration – indigenous peoples, landowners, governments, all of us – working together to create a healthier environment for people and the planet!
Cathy Romano was honoured for her work as our Health Care Coordinator for 24 years. Cathy has a remarkable legacy of volunteering; of being an active board member and president of Camp Kawartha’s Board of Directors as well more recently, being a valued member of our staff team. She was thanked for her outstanding leadership and for creating a first-class healthcare system that meets the demands of a busy year-round facility.
Jim Coyle from the Rotary Club of Peterborough also announced a donation of almost $2,700 from their Scottish Rotary counterparts who visited Camp Kawartha back in November. We are one of two charities chosen from across the province!
11,000 people (children, youth and adults) participated in all that we have to offer over the past fiscal year – visiting our summer camp, outdoor centre, our environment centre, and participating in workshops and outreach programming. An amazing achievement considering the challenges we faced over the past year.

We look forward to the many great things yet to come as we emerge from the past few years, stronger and more resilient than ever.

Huge THANK YOU to the Peterborough Museum & Archives
We owe some serious thanks to the Peterborough Museum for allowing us to mount our recent exhibition – Camp Kawartha: Making a Splash for 100 Years. It celebrated the 100-year history of Summer Camp here on the shores of Clear Lake. According to Museum staff the exhibition pulled in good numbers and guests enjoyed the many pictures, artifacts, and stories that traced the history.
We extend a thank you to the following Museum staff for their support – Kim Reid, Jon Oldham, Faryn Stanley, Dustin McIlwain, and Owen Thompson.
And the Scavenger Hunt Prizes go to...
The scavenger hunt related to our exhibition at the Peterborough Museum wrapped up December 4th and we have two winners…
Adelena won the prize pack from Camp Kawartha, and Glen Caradus won the prize pack from the Peterborough Museum! Both had all the answers correct and both receive a prize pack valued at $100.00!

Thank to all who participated! We hope you had some fun!
It's Story Time!
We couldn’t end the year without thinking about what’s ahead. The focus of much of our fundraising continues to be our Subsidy Funds, both for school groups and for summer campers. Here is an excerpt from a letter we received which told of our impact. These kids would not have been able to attend without the whole class being subsidized.
All students, teachers, and parent volunteers had a blast at Camp Kawartha!

We had the privilege of playing the much-loved Survival Game! Students were thoroughly engaged from start to finish. You could hear a pin drop the whole time the awesome camp leaders were explaining the game. Students loved the anticipation and building excitement as we hiked to the game location. Thank you so much for even getting the teachers and parents involved, every single person had a huge smile on while “trying to survive”. Students took this learning, and the learning from the cooperative and Inuit games, back to school. Every day since our trip the students have brought up particular parts of our day at the camp! Connections have even been made by the grade 4’s between the animal hierarchy to the hierarchies seen in various ancient civilizations we have been studying! The grade 3’s have been discussing some of the learning about the Inuit, in their Early Settlers learning during Social Studies.

All students were happy, safe, and engaged throughout the whole day. These kiddos were sad to see their time up for this round at Camp Kawartha. Thank you so much for having us!

Wow! Home Run!

Please think of us when you are considering your annual giving plans. There are so many areas you can help Camp Kawartha from supporting our Sponsorship and Subsidy Fund, to helping rewild our property after the storm. Or think about subsidizing an Outdoor Education visit for an inner-city school that otherwise could never afford this experience. Why not consider supporting Camp Kawartha’s efforts to replace some of its older cabins with exemplars of sustainable design – helping kids bear witness to green building in action.
You can make your donation through CanadaHelps before December 31st and you will receive an instant tax receipt. Or you can send a cheque, made out to Camp Kawartha (1010 Birchview Road, Douro-Dummer, ON K0L 2H0), even e-transfer to [email protected] with the notation 2022 donation! You will receive your receipt in the mail.

All donations are very welcome. You are integral part of realizing Camp Kawartha’s mission of fostering stewardship and creating meaningful change.
