The London and area construction industry is a tight knit and supportive community and Women in Construction (WIC) is no exception.

The London & District Construction Association WIC partnered with Fanshawe College to offer female students of the Don Smith School of Building Technology the opportunity to participate on a Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario Women Build home. Our goal was to contribute a week to help build a home, and create an environment where students could relate to women in the industry.

The results of our campaign exceeded our expectations. We thought $10,000 and 50 volunteers would be challenging. Once the word got out the response was overwhelming. Sponsoring companies and individuals donated over $13,000 in total and we ended up with 63 women volunteers; including 28 female students from Don Smith School of Building Technology.

The interactions within each day’s group was also a great success; the environment where students could network with professionals, meet potential mentors, ask questions and give feedback on what WIC currently offers and could offer in the future was remarkable.

We look forward to partnering with Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario and Fanshawe College again next year!

Sincerely,
Jen Leppard, Marketing and Communications Manager, Women in Construction
