to long time One Health Champion Lisa Conti, DVM, MPH, DACVPM, CPM who left this earth on November 7 after a long battle with cancer.
Even when we see and know it is coming, losing this precious One Health champion (https://bit.ly/3ljp9mR) is heart-wrenching. Lisa, you are a beautiful soul. Your warm, calm, level-headed, insightful, respectful, knowledge and never ceasing commitment to the One Health movement cannot be replaced. You have left a hole in all our hearts. We promise to carry on, to keep the faith, and just keep swimming towards a day when One Health truly is the default way of doing business around the world. Sending you Hugs in Heaven.

Intergovernmental Science - Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES ) Report
Future pandemics will emerge more often, spread more rapidly, do more damage to the world economy and kill more people than COVID-19 unless there is a transformative change in the global approach to dealing with infectious diseases, warns a major new report on biodiversity and pandemics by 22 leading experts from around the world……… The experts agree that escaping the era of pandemics is possible, but that this will require a seismic shift in approach from reaction to prevention. The report offers a number of policy options that would help to reduce and address pandemic risk. Among those included: Institutionalizing the ‘One Health’ approach in national governments to build pandemic preparedness, enhance pandemic prevention programs, and to investigate and control outbreaks across sectors. New Free Training Module Framed in One Health!!
Created by the University of Washington's Center for One Health Research, Harborview Medical Center, and the Northwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety Continuing Education Program, these training modules are designed to assist the process of creating and implementing infection prevention and control plans on animal farms that will control COVID-19 as well as other infectious diseases important for both human and animal health. Through workplace hazard identification, control and evaluation, and integration of occupational medicine services, such programs can protect the health of both workers and animals on farms. https://deohs.washington.edu/cohr/farm-infection-training

Hosted by the German Federal Foreign Office (FFO) in partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Building on the Berlin Principles on One Health which were launched at the 2019 One Planet, One Health, One Future Conference, this year’s conference addressed how to move forward after the pandemic elaborating on what One Health looks like in practice and how to operationalize it while working to prevent future zoonotic pandemics. To help educate children and young adults about the importance of bats in our environment, as well as the potential for some bats to transmit zoonotic diseases such as rabies, USDA Wildlife Services and the One Health Commission's Bat Rabies Education Team (BRET) recently sponsored an infographic competition among college students in a central US region. A 5-minute video explaining the One Health approach to bat rabies was developed to launch the competition.
The winner (Right, $500) was Brooke MacNeill, a graduate student in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University. Brooke developed her infographic in both English and Spanish.
The runner up (Below, $100) was Stephen Nachtsheim, a graduate student in Biomedical Communications at the University of Toronto.

The Partnership for Environmental Education and Rural Health (PEER) Program at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) has launched a PEER One Health Curriculum free to educators to incorporate into their teaching. Within a One Health module, students receive instruction on data organization and analysis, identifying trends, and drawing conclusions utilizing real-world information about infectious diseases from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO). Calls upon Member States to build, strengthen and promote health systems, including primary health care, that are strong, resilient, functional, well governed, responsive, accountable, integrated, community-based, people-centred and capable of quality service delivery, supported by a competent health workforce, adequate health infrastructure and essential public health functions and capacities, enabling legislative and regulatory frameworks, as well as sufficient and sustainable funding, calls upon donors and other relevant stakeholders to support countries that lack the capacity to implement such measures, recognizes the value of an integrated One Health approach that fosters cooperation between the human health, animal health and plant health, as well as environmental and other relevant sectors, and underlines the urgent need for continued close work between the long-standing Tripartite, together with other relevant parts of the United Nations system and relevant stakeholders in this regard;

For One Health Day 2020, on November 3rd, ISOHA hosted Jane Parmley, DVM, PhD, Associate Professor in One Health in the Department of Population Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College/University of Guelph, in a discussion on One Health and Antimicrobial Resistance. Dr. Parmley shared a fascinating case study demonstrating how antibiotic use in chickens in Canada led to an increase in antibiotic-resistant infections in people. She noted that this is one of the few studies in which a direct link between antibiotic use in animals and resistant infections in people has been demonstrated. She emphasized that AMR is an extremely complex issue for which one group is not solely responsible and reminded us that finger-pointing (which we often see happening between the veterinary and human medical sectors) is counterproductive. She also discussed her experience bringing people from various backgrounds into focus groups to discuss their roles in addressing AMR. https://youtu.be/utT5AT0YOXY

The term pollinator health emerged through efforts to understand causes of bee decline and colony losses. This review proposes a definition for pollinator health and synthesize the available literature on the application of standardized biomarkers to assess health at the individual, colony, and population levels. The authors focus on biomarkers in honey bees and extrapolate the potential application of these approaches to monitor the health status of wild bee populations. They conclude by addressing challenges to pollinator health from a One Health perspective that emphasizes the interplay between environmental quality and human, animal, and bee health.

December 7-10, 2020 Virtual Conference
Four half-day sessions hosted by US NIEHS with partners at Understanding Climate and Health Associations in India (UCHAII), Indian Meteorological Society (IMS), and International Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR/Delhi) to consider the association of climate, environment, and natural disasters with infectious disease, especially COVID-19 in India, to understand how this knowledge can be applied in practice, and to share current research methods. There is a large body of evidence linking environmental factors such as temperature and humidity with infectious disease such as malaria, cholera and the like. However, the impact of climatological, environmental and extreme weather risk factors such as temperature, humidity and air pollution are less clear. Multiple disasters such as cyclones and COVID-19 co-exist. And the Indoor Environment is also of particular concern including workplace, school and industry settings, especially in terms of ventilation and air conditioning.

Side Event at the 6th Annual Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) Ministerial Meeting
Understanding the links between the environment and health risks and outcomes is critical to enhance surveillance and detection, develop early warning systems, and target multi-sectoral risk reduction strategies to address known and novel threats. This side event highlighted promising practices in engaging human and animal health and environment sector partners in capacity-building for health security, with a lens on zoonotic and vector-borne diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). It was intended to showcase examples of good practices, tools, resources and communications for GHSA members to strengthen coordination across disciplines and the public and private sectors. Organized this year by the One Health Platform, the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Infectious Diseases, South African Center for Infectious Disease Surveillance, and Africa CDC.
