The Workforce Development Board’s Regional Apprenticeship Development and Readiness (RADAR) Grant Highlights the Positive Impact of Registered Apprenticeship Programs to Celebrate National Apprenticeship Week
RADAR, in partnership with Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC), hosted an Apprenticeship Roundtable Discussion via Zoom to kick off National Apprenticeship Week.
Panelists included: representatives from the New York State Department of Labor, MVCC, Project Managers from our Workforce Development Board Apprenticeship grant programs, and a local employer.
Each panelists addressed aspects of Apprenticeships, and the benefits of Apprenticeships for businesses as well as workers. Some 107 people attended this event from various business sectors. Many who attended are now looking into ways they can contribute to the growing initiative to create Registered Apprenticeships and access to no-cost Pre-Apprenticeship training.

Out-of School Youth Accepted to SUNY Morrisville
“S” came to CDO Workforce in Norwich this past June with the goal of obtaining his General Equivalency Diploma and becoming an elementary school teacher.
He had dropped out of High School at the end of 10th grade, but due to Regent’s credit for Math, Social Studies and Science, he only needed to take the NY State English Language Arts Test (ELA). His employment experience includes working at a grocery store as a product tagger/cashier and working for an In-Home Service Provider as a Home Health Aide.
“S” passed his ELA exam on October 13th with a College Ready score, earning his GED. Soon after this accomplishment, he took the Fall Leadership Development Class that was offered by CDO Workforce. The instructor mentioned his focus, discipline and work ethic numerous times, also stating that "“S” is a model student with a model plan."
With the help of CDO Workforce staff, “S” completed his college application on October 26th and scheduled a campus visit for November 9th. They met with the admissions coordinator and got a tour of the campus that day.
"S" received his acceptance letter to SUNY Morrisville later that afternoon and will begin classes on January 23, 2023! CDO Workforce is currently setting up a Work Experience for him at a local Elementary School as a teacher’s assistant.
CONGRATULATIONS, "S"!!!

Successful Job Fair!
Penny Seeger, Otsego Co. Youth Counselor, and Kathy DeAngelo, CDO Disability Resource Coordinator attended a Career Fair at Gilbertsville-Mount Upton School on November 4, 2022 .
Dozens of local businesses and organizations spoke with students about our careers and about the type of work they might want to do. We were excited to see that there are several prospective Vets who want to open their own practices, future small business owners, scientists, constructions workers among the student body at GMU.
My personal favorite who was the ten year-old-young man who assured me that he had his career path figured out--He was going to take over his dad's food business after he retired from a successful career as a professional soccer player. When I asked him what his favorite thing to cook was, he said "M'am I'm too young to work near the stove...but I do run the register. And really, isn't that the most important job of all!" I guess he really does have it all figured out! While it is clear in the photos that our nylon backpacks were a big hit, they were not the number one attraction. We had to compete with live goats, a microscope that they could examine slides on, keyboards and headphones to play and a life-size skeleton!
It was a great event and perfect opportunity to talk to graduating seniors who are not college bound and administrators and counseling staff about our Out of School Youth Program and Transitional services for Youth with Disabilities.

RADAR Grant Participant Success!
This individual was referred to us by the Roofers Union. We were able to assist him with his first-year tools and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
As a result, RADAR was able to address the financial burden some individuals face when entering the Trades.
Since purchasing the needed materials, this individual has started his Apprenticeship and is on his way to becoming a Journeyman.
“I am blessed for the opportunity for RADAR to help me get the tools I needed to join the roofers union." the grant participant says. "I am grateful to the Roofer’s Union for taking the chance on me and giving me a different vision of what to do with my life. If I didn’t go through this I probably would still be at a job I do not like. Roofing is something I can make a good career with. I just want to be a good role model to the community and the people around me."
CONGRATULATIONS, RADAR GRANT PARTICIPANT!

Businesses: New York College Apprenticeship Network (NYCAN) Grant Can Help You Upskill Your Workforce
The Workforce Development Board of Herkimer, Madison & Oneida (WDB/HMO) has partnered with the NYCAN (NY College Apprenticeship Network) grant to reimburse on-the-job training costs for advanced manufacturing companies that have less than 50 employees and a registered apprentice program.
Wages can be reimbursed at 50% up to $25 an hour for six months of on-the-job training (OJT) with minimum paperwork.
The undirected funding provides many benefits for small to medium-sized manufacturing companies and ensures the apprentice is trained in accordance with the company’s standards and procedures.
If you would like to know how your company can take advantage of this funding or know of a company that would benefit, please contact Meghan McBennett at mmcbennett@working-solutions.org.

Getthere Transportation to Employment Program (TEP)
Getthere's Transportation to Employment Program (TEP) helps to remove transportation as a barrier to employment for Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, and Tioga County residents.
• TEP provides short-term transportation assistance in the form of bus passes, taxi rides, a network of volunteer drivers, and fuel cards - to be used for a personal vehicle or a carpool.
• We work with each person to develop a sustainable transportation strategy that allows
them to pay for their own transportation long-term in order to maintain their job and move
towards financial stability.
Who qualifies for Transportation to Employment (TEP)?
Individuals that are unable to afford the initial cost of transportation to work in Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, and Tioga Counties.
What is the referral process?
TEP is primarily a referral based program. We accept referrals from human service organizations, public workforce agencies, employers, staffing agencies, and hospital and court systems. We have an online referral and release form that is easy to fill out and submit. We do not require proof of income; however, we may ask for proof of employment.
Once we receive the referral, the Transportation to Employment Program Coordinator or Associate will reach out to the referring individual to get more information and determine if the program is a good fit for the person that was referred. If the person is a good candidate for TEP, the coordinator or associate will reach out to discuss short-term and long-term transportation options.
While we do accept self-referrals, we prefer to work with a caseworker or other individual that is able to support the needs of each program participant to help them maintain their job long-term. Most of the individuals that qualify for the program are facing additional barriers, such as affordable housing, access to health care, substance use, or physical and mental health, among other things.
