INNOVATION RESEARCH PROVIDES UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES TO SMALL BUSINESSES

Yes, dealing with the federal government is complicated. And yes – there can be barriers for small businesses who are attempting to compete with larger, more experienced firms. But there is at least one area where being a small business or a start-up has a great advantage over a larger more established firm: innovation research. Small businesses are nimble, much more likely to be able to think outside the box, and can adapt and pivot easier than a large business.
 
If you are into innovation research and the idea of bringing a new innovative product to market is of interest to you, you may want to learn more about the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. This program is designed specifically for small businesses (or start-ups) that are able to bring particular expertise or solution to a current challenge faced by one of eleven different federal agencies.

  • Vaccine Mandate modifications are still rolling out to federal contractors. GSA sent their modifications out to all schedule holders and experienced a 95% signatory rate. See the article here. View a recent training on contract modifications here.

  • DoD Cybersecurity Certification (CMMC) has some proposed changes in version 2.0 include reducing the number of certification levels from 5 to 3 tiers. The basic level (level 1) would require a self-assessment instead of a paid third-party assessment. Some level 2 who do not handle “controlled unclassified information” would also be allowed to conduct a self-assessment. See these helpful articles here and here or contact your PTAC Counselor to learn more on the potential changes and how to prepare.
