When the weather starts to get colder, it's important to remember to dress children in layers to keep them warm. This is especially necessary for younger children, as they generate less heat and get colder faster than adults.

Babies

Indoors: Aim for a room temperature of 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit. It's essential to keep them warm, but not too warm, especially when they're sleeping. Add just one more layer than you're comfortable wearing to layer your baby safely. If you're using a sleep sack, consider it as one layer of clothing. Keep an eye out for signs that your baby may be too hot or too cold, such as sweating or flushing. If they're too hot, remove a layer, and if they're too cold, add a layer.

Outdoors: When you take your baby outdoors in below-freezing temperatures, limiting their time outside is best. However, if you need to go out, remember to dress them in layers. Start with a snug body suit, followed by pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Add a jacket, hat, mittens, and booties on top of that.

Toddlers

Indoors: A onesie with pants is sufficient. If your house is on the cooler side, you can add a sweater, ensuring it's comfortable for a child. Remember to put socks on their feet to keep their toes warm.

Outdoors: When dressing toddlers for outdoor activities, choose layers that can be easily removed. Please look for waterproof outer layers and check to ensure their mittens and boots are not wet. You can add neck warmers and a fun hat with a jacket. Reframe using scarves as they can be a safety hazard.

Preschoolers

With preschoolers, layering is still important. However, since they may spend more time playing outside, investing in waterproof gear like boots is a good idea. Keeping them dry and warm is crucial whether they're playing at home or sledding down slopes.

Regardless of the child's age, remember to remove any coats or snowsuits before buckling them into their car seat. These materials can create too much space between your baby and the seat straps. Once they're buckled in, you can layer a blanket over them to keep them cozy.
