"The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude."

December Sip of Serenity: The Power of Attitude

Greetings!

In a recent yoga class, the teacher shared the three A's of Anusara yoga: Attitude, Alignment, and Action. (Anusara yoga is a system of Hatha yoga.)

Each pillar builds upon the other, starting with the foundation of "attitude." It makes total sense, right? After all, how often have you gone into a situation filled with doubt or bracing for frustration and discovered how it felt like swimming through molasses—when the same exact situation might go so differently when you came at it with a better mood or state of mind.

Beyond shifting our emotional state, cultivating a "good attitude" also opens us to spiritual receptivity. When I start coaching sessions with a brief centering exercise, it changes everything. Both my client and I shift out of our ruminating minds and into a clearer, more spacious awareness—where wisdom emerges and creativity has room to play.

When we create inner space, we get to choose how we fill it.

Millie Grenough's four Oasis strategies—simple, evidence-based practices—can create this inner space in as little as a minute. Given how stressful the holidays can be (let alone every day!) what if you could access a moment of calm whenever you needed it? It's a way to live the adage: Easy Does It.

Over the next two weeks, I'll write about the other two A's: Alignment and Action. But if you'd like to start practicing right away, Millie's Oasis training video series offers brief daily videos teaching all four strategies. It's an easy, gentle way to shift your attitude and find more ease this December.

May you find peace each day within you.

With Love,

Suzanne

December's Sip of Serenity from Oasis in the Overwhelm

Sip of Serenity Exercise

  1. Stand (if you can) and explore your balance. Gently move from side to side and forward and back. Make small circles in each direction and finally settle in that "center" point.

  2. Notice your feet on the floor/earth. Imagine your head is like a balloon floating up towards the sky. Feel a gentle lengthening from your planted feet up your spine and up through your neck and head.

  3. Take three to five slow breaths. Count to five on the inhale and count to seven for each exhale. Imagine the breath traveling through your body with each breath.

Take one more minute to notice how your body and mind feel. Are you just a bit more synchronized and open?
