Reasons a Retailer Should Have a Master Recycler
as a Staff Member
| | |
A Master Recycler is typically someone trained in advanced recycling practices, waste reduction, and sustainability education. The Master Recycler works to improve recycling systems and teaches others how to reduce waste.
For a Subaru retailer, having a Master Recycler on staff could bring unique benefits. A Master Recycler could make the retailer a leader in sustainability. It’s a relatively small investment with big returns in compliance, reputation, and customer trust.
🚗 Why It Could Make Sense
- Operational Waste Reduction: Retail facilities generate a lot of wastepaper, packaging, plastics, and even hazardous materials like oil filters. A recycling expert could streamline disposal and reduce costs.
- Customer Education: A Master Recycler could teach customers about recycling car batteries, tires, and fluids, positioning the retailer as eco-conscious.
- Marketing Advantage: Sustainability is a selling point. A retail facility that promotes recycling and environmental responsibility could attract eco-minded buyers.
- Compliance: Regulations around hazardous waste disposal are strict. A Master Recycler could help ensure compliance and avoid fines.
- Vehicle Recycling Knowledge: Cars involve metals, plastics, glass, tires, batteries, and fluids. A Master Recycler could help ensure these materials are responsibly handled when vehicles are scrapped or parts replaced.
⚖️ Core Responsibilities
- Waste Stream Management
- Audit retail facility waste (paper, plastics, metals, hazardous fluids, tires, batteries).
- Create systems for proper sorting, recycling, and safe disposal.
- Vehicle End-of-Life Recycling
- Coordinate with certified auto recyclers for scrapped cars.
- Ensure parts (catalytic converters, tires, batteries) are reused or recycled.
- Hazardous Material Compliance
- Oversee safe handling of oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, and refrigerants.
- Maintain compliance with EPA and state regulations.
- Customer Education
- Provide guidance on recycling car batteries, tires, and EV components.
- Offer “green tips” for vehicle maintenance.
- Sustainability Reporting
- Track recycling rates, waste reduction, and energy savings.
- Share results with customers and community for transparency.
Training & Certification
- Master Recycler Program (many cities/counties offer this training)
- Automotive Environmental Compliance Training (EPA/state-specific)
- Hazardous Waste Handling Certification (for fluids, batteries, refrigerants)
- Sustainability Leadership Courses (to align with corporate goals)
Benefits to Retailer
- Reduced waste disposal costs and potential rebates from recycling
- Enhanced reputation as a green retailer
- Stronger compliance with environmental regulations
- Increased customer trust and loyalty through visible sustainability efforts
✅ This role could be part-time or full-time, depending on retailer size. Smaller Subaru retailers might train an existing employee, while larger ones could justify a dedicated sustainability coordinator.
I am certain that you have more ideas concerning the roles and responsibilities of a Master Recycler. Please share them with us. E-mail me at chuck@greendealersupport.com or reply to this e-mail with your information. Be sure to include pictures whenever possible.

.
💛 Employee and Community Benefits
- Allows for Wellness and Education Benefits: Some companies use beekeeping as a wellness initiative or therapeutic activity for employees and veterans.
- Generates Perks for Customers: Retailers can bottle and gift honey to customers or staff, creating a unique and memorable brand touchpoint.

Evergreen Subaru -- Auburn, ME
Androscoggin River Cleanup
| | |
Evergreen Subaru, in Auburn, ME, is a proud sponsor of the Androscoggin River Cleanup, in conjunction with the Androscroggin Land Trust.
Volunteers from Evergreen helped to remove debris and trash from the river and its banks.
"Thank you to everyone who helped make our Annual River Clean-Up a success! It truly takes many hands to heal a river. The Androscoggin River, once listed among the nation’s ten most polluted, is now making the grade thanks to decades of care, advocacy, and community action. At Androscoggin Land Trust, our mission is to protect—through conservation and stewardship—the important natural areas, traditional landscapes, and outdoor experiences found throughout the Androscoggin River watershed. Together, we’re ensuring this river continues to thrive for generations to come."
You can watch the video, provided by the trust, here.
The Androscoggin River cleanup efforts have been pivotal in restoring water quality, reviving ecosystems, and reconnecting communities with nature.
- The Androscoggin River was once severely polluted, largely due to discharges from pulp and paper mills in Rumford and Jay, Maine. The river often lost all oxygen, killing fish and turning water unnatural colors.
- In 2023, the Androscoggin Mill in Jay permanently closed, marking a major shift in the river’s industrial footprint.
- Cleanup efforts are not just environmental—they’re also economic and cultural. Reviving trout fisheries and improving water quality attracts tourism and boosts local economies.
- Volunteers and conservationists see these cleanups as part of a larger mission to restore the river’s natural flow, biodiversity, and community connection.
Is there a river, lake, stream, ocean/beach, park, etc., near your retail facility that could benefit from a little TLC? Please consider organizing your own cleanup effort, involving both employees and customers.
River cleanups are essential for protecting ecosystems, reducing ocean pollution, and safeguarding human health. They prevent plastic waste from entering waterways, preserve biodiversity, and raise public awareness about environmental stewardship. Here’s a deeper look at why river cleanups matter:
🌊 Environmental Impact
- Rivers are gateways to the ocean, carrying not only water and nutrients but also plastic waste. In fact, up to 80% of ocean plastic originates from rivers.
- Plastic pollution disrupts aquatic ecosystems, blocking natural water flow and damaging habitats. This threatens biodiversity and the survival of species that rely on clean water.
🐟 Wildlife Protection
- Aquatic animals often mistake plastic for food, leading to choking, poisoning, or starvation. These plastics then move up the food chain, affecting larger predators and even humans.
- Microplastics, formed as plastic breaks down, absorb toxic chemicals and contaminate water sources. They've been found in seafood, drinking water, and even human blood.
🚰 Human Health and Safety
- Polluted rivers can carry pathogens, heavy metals, and chemicals that pose serious health risks. These contaminants may enter drinking water supplies or recreational areas.
- Urban runoff and agricultural waste contribute to non-point source pollution, which is harder to trace and manage...but equally harmful.
🌱 Ecosystem Restoration
- Cleanups help restore natural habitats, allowing native plants and animals to thrive again. They also improve water quality and reduce the risk of flooding caused by debris blockages.
🧍♀️ Community Engagement
- Participating in cleanups fosters environmental responsibility and educates people about sustainable waste practices.
- Local initiatives, like watershed cleanups, empower communities to take action and make a visible difference.
✅ How You Can Help
- Join cleanup events organized by local groups or environmental organizations.
- Reduce plastic use by switching to reusable bags, bottles, and containers.
- Support policies that regulate plastic production and improve waste management systems.
River cleanups are more than just removing trash—they’re a powerful tool in maintaining an eco-friendly balance for our planet.
