A Message from

President and CEO Neil Ashbaugh

The year 2022 was one of many new and exciting improvements at New Century Careers, including the addition of key team members, updates to several areas of technologies and facilities to enhance delivery of Registered Apprenticeship and Registered Pre-Apprenticeship programs, as well as recognition of our great mission work by national and international media outlets.

We couldn't do this work without the substantial support of our funders,

partner companies, and our awesome NCC staff. To follow are brief highlights of our 2022 accomplishments!

Continued prosperity through apprenticeship - In partnership with 14 companies, NCC's Group Sponsor Machinist Apprenticeship Program currently has 19 Registered Machinist Apprentices and has awarded two Journey Worker Certificates, advancing their careers.

Development in partner company relations - NCC continues to add new partner companies, reaching over 130 this year who are all looking for pre-apprentices that NCC can provide.

Growth in media presence - Over the course of the year, NCC has appeared on various news outlets including CNN, Sky News Australia and Newsy.

New staff members - NCC gained valuable additions to the team in Sarah Bast, student services & development Associate, and Ronald Buckner, marketing & communications generalist.

M2K curriculum digitization - Funded by a grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation, NCC partnered with Rewyndr and WIN Digital Solutions to develop and introduce a digitized MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) curriculum in order to improve and modernize training experiences.

Technological upgrades - With funding from grants provided by the Richard King Mellon Foundation, United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania and the Hillman Foundation, NCC has been able to make various upgrades in on-site technology to improve upon the training and productivity for trainees, apprentices, instructors and staff. These upgrades include new smart televisions to use for classroom and apprenticeship instruction, classroom computers and monitors, staff laptops, faster WiFi and more.

Facility updates - The Anselmo Training Innovation Center has received updates throughout the year including front lobby renovations, a new Sonitrol Security system, and an updated paint job in portions of the office, shop, breakroom and classroom areas.

Updated and improved website - With funding from the Hillman Foundation, NCC was able to work with GrowthHive to rework and modernize our website.

National Manufacturing Day Open House - NCC and TRAK Machine Tools hosted an Open House Event at the Anselmo Training Innovation Center in recognition of National Manufacturing Day, October 7.

National Apprenticeship Week - In celebration of National Apprenticeship Week 2022, NCC participated in virtual interviews with True Position Inc. and CP Industries, two of our partner companies.

With thanks to Larry Hayhurst!

New Century Careers extends gratitude and best wishes to Larry Hayhurst (right), training and facility supervisor, upon his retirement.

He brought to NCC extensive experience including manual machining, CNC programming and robotics application skills, 10 years’ experience managing Geometric Grinding, a tool and cutter grinding company in Irwin, PA, and teaching and managing research and engineering machine shops at Carnegie Mellon University for 14 years.

Larry said recently, "I came to work for New Century Careers after 51 years in the machinist trade. I hoped to give back to society and help new students take up machining.”

“Larry certainly did that during his time here,” noted Neil Ashbaugh, NCC president and CEO. “Larry was a key contributor to the Rewyndr and WIN Digital Solutions project team that transferred much of the MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) pre-apprenticeship curriculum to a digitized format. The procedures and steps he created ensure that hundreds of pre-apprentices will have a modern, understandable means to accelerate and enhance technical skills to make them excellent machinists,” Ashbaugh added.

Larry also was instrumental in installing and introducing trainees to NCC’s robotics capabilities on the Haas ST-10Y with FANUC robotic arm.

“His technical and training expertise, problem-solving and shop management skills will be missed,” Ashbaugh added.

NCC's national media presence stresses critical need

for workforce trainees to meet demand

New Century Careers continues to be invited to join the regional and national discussion of factors affecting manufacturing, including workforce demands and related topics. Neil Ashbaugh, NCC president and CEO, recently was interviewed by another national news outlet, NEWSY (A Scripps Media Company), for a segment on Newsy’s "The Why."

The interview aired on December 2 with rebroadcasts throughout the month.

NCC undergoes tech upgrades with support

from United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania

New Century Careers is the recipient of the Falk Facilities and Technology Improvement Fund, a grant provided by United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

With this funding, NCC was able to obtain new technology to improve M2K and apprenticeship instruction, including smart televisions, classroom computers and monitors, and new staff laptops.

Mike Mills, an instructor for NCC's Machinist Apprenticeship Program, has begun to introduce use of smart televisions into his instruction routine. "This will really have a positive impact on training. Very easy and effective to use. The apprentices gave positive feedback as well", Mills stated.

NCC is very thankful to have received this support from United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, and is excited to use this new equipment for the betterment of its training programs.

M2K completer spotlight: Michael Pro and Tyler Smith

MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) trainees, Michael Pro (left) and Tyler Smith (right), recently completed the program and secured job placement with W.W. Patterson, one of NCC's partner companies.

Since beginning the program in July, both trainees earned an impressive number of National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) credentials, completed ten or more NIMS projects and achieved many metalworking skills.

Registration for M2K is ongoing at the Eastern Westmoreland CTC site in Latrobe. A new cohort for M2K training in Pittsburgh is enrolling now. The next Pittsburgh daytime cohort will begin Monday, January 30. By enrolling in this cohort, you can begin your manufacturing career by the beginning of summer.

M2K and Group Sponsor Apprenticeship completer

awarded Journey Worker Certificate

Terry Cousins (right), a completer of NCC's MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) and Group Sponsor Machinist Apprenticeship programs has been awarded his Journey Worker Certificate.

Upon completion of the M2K program, Terry began working at True Position Inc., where he continued to gain more experience while he served as an apprentice.

"When I go down to the classroom and we do the actual course work, I've learned so much stuff that I didn't quite understand." Cousins said during a virtual interview with NCC President & CEO Neil Ashbaugh. "Expect to learn quite a bit. If you're planning on being in this industry for very long at all, it's something I'd implore everyone to do."

While Cousins may have completed his apprenticeship, his education did not end with his Journey Worker Certificate. He continues to grow as a machinist and gain more experience while working at True Position.

NCC congratulates Terry on earning his Journey Worker certificate and continuing his career at True Position Inc.!
