Dear Neighbors,
It’s been a busy two weeks and I have a few updates for you:
Local Traffic Authority Course
Road safety is a serious and ongoing concern for me, and it is why I am taking a course on the Local Traffic Authority. In 2024, about 330 people died in car crashes in Connecticut, with annual crash-related costs totaling roughly $6 billion statewide. There is clearly more work to be done.
Every town and municipality has a Local Traffic Authority (LTA), which serves as the first point of contact for traffic concerns on public roads. In Greenwich, the LTA is the Board of Selectmen.
The LTA’s role is an important one because it is the body that decides when to install, revise, or remove regulatory devices like traffic control signs, signals and pavement markings. These measures are key determinants of the safety of our roads.
The priority for LTAs is to develop a traffic safety culture and address safety concerns proactively. The safety culture informs what we prioritize to make roads safer for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists so we can eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries.
I look forward to engaging with our Department of Public Works to ensure that our roads are safer for all. Do you have a road safety concern in your neighborhood? Let us know here.
Department of Parks & Recreation Fee Change
At the last Board of Selectmen meeting on December 8th, the Department of Parks and Recreation presented its proposed Parks and Recreation Fees for 2026. I encourage you to review the proposed fees and submit comments here.
Our next Board of Selectmen meeting is December 23rd at 10 am and that’s when we’ll be voting on that item.
Hamilton Avenue School HVAC
I’m happy to see that the Representative Town Meeting (RTM) recently voted overwhelmingly (142-18-6) to approve funding for the Hamilton Avenue School HVAC project. Revamping the school’s geothermal system will save taxpayers money over a conventional HVAC system and give neighbors relief from the noisy (and expensive) temporary system that’s been in place for two years.
As always, please feel free to reach out to me at: Rachel.Khanna@greenwichct.gov or (203) 622-7706.
Wishing you a very happy holiday season,
