Wow – what a fantastic year 2024 turned out to be.
Together, we achieved so much. We deepened our understanding of invasive and native plant species, explored local habitats to meet the critters that call them home, learned about native bats, and strengthened our connections with organizations and volunteers across the Fraser Valley. Along the way, many of you even made new friends – a reminder of the special community we’re building together.
Teamwork at Its Finest
This year, Habitat Healers removed countless truckloads of invasive plants, including Himalayan blackberry, English ivy, lamium, and morning glory. These efforts cleared the way for native species to flourish.
Thanks to your hard work:
- Over 1,000 native trees and shrubs were planted at McKee Park in Abbotsford.
- At Lane Creek in Mission, we returned for a second year to plant 120 trees and shrubs and installed over 300 dogwood stakes along a creek slope.
If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to visit these sites – take a stroll and see the new greenery thriving thanks to your efforts.
More Than Planting
Our annual native plant sales were once again a huge success, and it was wonderful to see so many of you step up to help. At Ryder Lake, the annual toadlet migration brought us together to install temporary fencing, a vital action to protect this vulnerable species. Volunteers from all walks of life showed up ready to make a difference, and your dedication continues to inspire us.
A Personal Note
This past year has been one of growth and connection. The creation of this Bulletin allowed us to share more about our volunteer and learning activities, and it has been a joy to see how it’s brought us closer together.
I’ve had the privilege of getting to know so many of you better over the year. Babies have been born, children have grown, and some longtime volunteers have retired or moved away. While it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to familiar faces, it’s heartening to know that there’s always room for new friends to join us in the year ahead.
Whether you’ve been with us at events or are simply following along with this Bulletin, thank you for being here. Your care for nature and commitment to our mission mean the world to us. Read on to see our First Edition of the Volunteer Yearbook.
Wishing you a joyful holiday season and looking forward to all we’ll accomplish together in 2025.
With gratitude,
Patricia Fantillo
Coordinator of Volunteers
