Call for Reviewers for the Journal of Professional Counseling
The executive editor for the
Journal of Professional Counseling (JPC), the official journal of the Texas Counseling Association, is currently accepting applications for positions on the journal editorial review board team. JPC is an indexed, semi-annual scholarly publication, aiming at providing clinical, theoretical, and empirical guidance to counselors, educators, researchers, and other mental health professionals. Qualifications for the board include a graduate degree and licensure in a counseling, a record of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals, and a commitment to providing prompt and comprehensive reviews of approximately 3-5 manuscripts annually. Becoming an editorial reviewer is a great way to: Impact and guide the profession, build your resume/CV, grow your name and brand in the counseling profession.
Individuals interested in applying are asked to include (a) a cover letter outlining their interest, relevant experience, and reasons for applying and (b) a current CV or resume.

2019 Texas Jaycee Foundation Scholarship
The Texas Jaycee Foundation is a civic, non-profit organization dedicated to providing scholarships to budding scholars and to saving the Legacy of the Texas Jaycees and Texas JCI Senators.
- Follow the instructions closely ensuring completeness of the application as with any scholarship application. Please note there must be a GPA on a 4.0 scale included.

Free Training Over Rules/Regulations Related to the Military Interstate Compact
The Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission is hosting a free training on the rules and regulations under Texas Education Code 162 for military connected students transitioning in and out of Texas public schools.
The training will be held from 1:00-3:30pm on Thursday, December 13 at Central Texas College, Building #122, in Killeen, Texas.

$11 Million to Address Well-Being for Children of Color in Greater Houston
The Hogg Foundation invites eligible organizations in Texas to apply for the Communities of Care initiative by January 9, 2019. The initiative is designed to support community resilience, mental health and well-being in the Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) with a special focus on children and youth of color and their families.

2019 Robert Lee Sutherland Seminar: Working Together for Rural Well-Being

Robert Lee Sutherland seminars are to reflect on the state of mental health and promote innovation and collaboration among consumers, providers and advocates.
This year's theme is "Working Together for Rural Well-Being." This free, one-day seminar is open to all who are interested in the topics of resilience, mental health and well-being in rural communities.

Texas Education Agency (TEA) Grant Opportunity
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is pleased to announce a grant opportunity to develop College and Career Readiness (CCR) Free Instructional Resources and Materials (FIRM) for middle school.
Eligible applicants may be awarded up to $725,000 for the development of instructional resources and materials.
The deadline to
submit the application
and supporting materials is January 4, 2019.
Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, institutions of higher education, local education agencies (LEAs), and regional education service centers (ESCs).
The project will be funded through a Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) federal discretionary grant. GEAR UP aims to increase preparation for and participation in postsecondary education among low-income students. The instructional materials will be piloted within GEAR UP subgrantee schools and, if found to be successful, we will promote broad adoption across the state.

Education Corporation of America Announces Closures
|
|
In accordance with the General Appropriations Act, Senate Bill 1, Article III-269, Section 49, 85th Texas Legislature, Regular Session, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has completed the
ninth report
on transfer. The report presents an assessment of the current performance of public universities with regard to community college transfer students in Texas. Conclusions and recommendations are based on higher education institutional data reported by public institutions and current literature related to transfer in higher education.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board was notified on Dec. 5 that Education Corporation of America (ERC) is closing all its schools, affecting approximately 3,600 students at 16 Texas campuses. The Coordinating Board’s mission is to safeguard Texas students. We are working with ECA and Texas public and private institutions to determine educational options for the displaced, degree-seeking ECA students in Texas. We created a resources page for students who have experienced a school closure. It is posted on our
website
and will be updated as new information is available.

Boundaries through the Holidays

The Wellness Committee wishes you happy holidays and a happy new year! While the holiday season can be filled with joy, this time of year can also present particular challenges for maintaining healthy boundaries. Here are a few tips for maintaining healthy boundaries through the holidays:
- Picture the other side of setting the boundary - what will you gain by communicating your needs now? For example, it might feel uncomfortable to talk about gift giving expectations, but think about the reduced stress you’ll feel later on when you have been able to stay within your holiday budget.
- Schedule time on the front end for what you need to do to care for yourself. If you wait until all the tasks are done and everyone’s needs are met, you’ll never get around to doing things you need to do for your own peace and stress management.
- Acknowledge the sadness that can come from setting a difficult boundary. For example, you may decide that a family member with unaddressed anger problems cannot participate in a family gathering with young children. Make space for the sadness that can come with setting a painful boundary.
