Advocates win important first round against FPL’s leaking nuclear plant--
The case to remedy FPL’s dirty cooling canals moves forward!

In late 2016, the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE), Tropical Audubon Society (TAS) and Friends of the Everglades (Friends) filed suit against FPL for violations of the Clean Water Act and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit caused by its Turkey Point facility near Miami. FPL responded by filing a motion to dismiss, which has been denied, twice.

The case moves forward. SACE, TAS and Friends maintain that FPL’s proposed remedies will not stem the pollution from the Turkey Point facility’s open industrial cooling canals. Mechanical draft cooling towers are the best available control technology to fix the underlying problems at Turkey Point, along with the closure of the failed cooling canals to stop the pollution seeping to Biscayne Bay and Biscayne National Park, and prevent additional groundwater contamination into the Biscayne Aquifer, South Florida’s sole source of drinking water. Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
denies permit to drill for oil in Everglades

In late November, DEP Secretary Noah Valenstein issued an order denying a permit for oil drilling in western Broward County, despite an administrative law judge's recommendation that the permit be issued. Secretary Valenstein noted that his department had not issued a permit for oil and gas exploration in the Everglades since 1967, and that the subject property is within the boundaries of Everglades restoration. DEP officials testified in May during an administrative hearing in Tallahassee that drilling would pose a threat to surface waters and the aquifer that supplies drinking water to Southeast Florida.

Kantar Real Estate sought permission to drill on five acres within 20,000 acres in Water Conservation Area 3 near Everglades National Park. The proposed well would be dug 11,800 feet deep at the site and located 5.3 miles west of U.S. Highway 27. Read more Click Here to Read More .

Don’t let FPL Pollute & Loot -- Speak Up Now!
You break it, you fix it: FPL should not charge customers to “fix” its cooling canals

FPL’s cooling canals have been leaking for decades. Now the company wants us, its customers, to pay to clean them up. The company proposes to collect $200 million from customers to implement the partial remedy agreed upon with Miami-Dade County’s Department of Environmental Management (DERM). Consumers should not pay for the FPL's mistakes. Click Here to Read More .

— Photographs by Kirsten Hines
Friday, December 8, 6-8pm
Serving as SoMi ArtWalk's eastern outpost, our historic Doc Thomas House period parlor is transformed into a vibrant art gallery as local author, wildlife photographer and conservationist Kirsten Hines presents her exhibit titled "Birds, Oiseaux, Pájaros." The show provides an intimate perspective on the lives of birds from around the world, an opportunity to experience their behaviors, habitats and the moods they can inspire through a combination of unaltered documentary-style images, and a more interpretive abstract style achieved in-camera.

The opening night holiday reception includes light fare and a Donation Bird Bar.

Bonus: Park for free on Tropical Audubon's Steinberg Nature Center grounds via the 55th Avenue entry gate and use TAS as your ArtWalk home base for a gallery-hopping stroll into town.

"Birds, Oiseaux, Pájaros" will hang through December in the "Florida Heritage Site" 1932 cottage with viewings by appointment: Hours vary, so to assure entry to the exhibit please call or write in advance: 305.667.7337 or [email protected] .
