Zoo Miami will host a bird festival to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. To open
the festival, Tropical Audubon Society will lead a free morning bird walk. The walk is limited to 25 participants and reservations are required. Participants planning to reenter the zoo at the conclusion of the bird walk will be required to pay the zoo's entrance fee.
Snake Road Photography Field Trip

Join us for a fun 1/2-day photographic adventure. Learn about local birds, other wildlife as well as basic technical and artistic tips to improve your photographic skills. Amateur photographers of all levels are welcome.
Meet at 6:00am at the Miccosukee Service Plaza on I-75 and Snake Road (Exit 49) visit Snake Road, Dinner Island Ranch, regroup meet at Big Cypress Landing (downtown Big Cypress Indian Reservation) for snacks and chat before heading back to Miami.

The milestone 1916 agreement between the US and the United Kingdom/Canada -- both governments "being desirous of saving from indiscriminate slaughter and of insuring the preservation of such migratory birds as are either useful to man or are harmless, have resolved to adopt some uniform system of protection which shall effectively accomplish such objects" -- compelled future protection of migrating North American birds.

The State of Florida is attempting to take back one of America's National Wildlife Refuges: The Arthur R. Marshall
Loxahatchee
National Wildlife Refuge in Palm Beach County. This enchanting sanctuary provides critical habitat to 250 species of birds -- including the Everglades' largest wading bird colony -- and hosts more than 7,000 active nests.
In a move that has long been encouraged by the state's powerful sugar industry, Florida has begun the process of evicting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from the site. If successful, their eviction will eliminate federal wildlife protections on the 144,000 -- acre refuge, which presently embodies one of the last remnants of the historic Everglades.

The period parlor at our historic Doc Thomas House headquarters is transformed into a charming art gallery as High Pines resident and artist/illustrator Louise Gardner-Schwartz presents her enchanting "Birds of Florida" series of oils on canvas. Louise takes great pleasure in capturing the beauty of all living things, as is reflected in her nuanced brushstrokes and exquisite attention to Nature's details. The Ringling College of Art graduate is also a TAS member who grew up in the area and fondly recalls feeding carrots to "Goldie," Doc Thomas's horse. Art Nite also features our popular Donation Bird Bar!
If you miss the opening reception, "Birds of Florida" will hang through December in our newly designated "Florida Heritage Site" 1932 cottage. For a private appointment to view the exhibit, please contact [email protected].

Ludlam Lights Twilight Walk

 Friends of Ludlam Trail and TAS invite the community to the 2nd annual Ludlam Lights, an illuminated twilight walk along the aspirational Ludlam Trail. When formally established, the linear park will run from Miami International Airport to Dadeland Station, connecting pedestrians and cyclists to 5 schools, 4 parks, shopping and mass transit. Participants are invited to join the lantern parade or simply hang at South Miami High School field for live music, food and festivities. Florida Trail Association Meeting
featuring Naturalist Roger Hammer

 Virtually "Paddle the Everglades Backcountry" with award-winning author, botanist, naturalist and photographer Roger L. Hammer, whose entertaining program promises to be both informative and captivating. Our distinguished guest is the recipient of the 1982 Marjory Stoneman Douglas Award and the 1996 Charles Brookfield Medal, among a litany of similar accolades, and is the Honorary Director of the Tropical Audubon Society board.
The retired Miami-Dade Parks Department senior naturalist is presently a part-time instructor and fieldtrip leader for Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. At the conclusion of his talk he will be signing his books, both those for sale (think holiday giving!) and any you wish to bring from your home library. (Cash or checks only.)

park sites: Everglades, Biscayne and Dry Tortugas
National
Parksand Big Cypress
National Preserve. Its purpose is to elevate awareness of our
national
parks with the hope of motivating action toward their continued protection. Experiential in approach, this exhibition presents natural and cultural objects, artwork
and film to communicate the
national
park idea and experience.
Curated by Jacqueline Crucet and designed by Miami-based design firm SimpleFly Creative, this exhibit is endorsed and supported by the
National
Park Service.
