Decisions, Decisions, Decisions!

Decisions shape our lives. My kids have heard this lesson so many times they can recite it. The 10-10-10 principle is simple but powerful: a choice you make in 10 seconds can ripple into the next 10 minutes, 10 hours, 10 days, 10 weeks, 10 months, 10 years — even a lifetime.

That short framework forces perspective. We live in a culture of instant reaction: a text fired off in anger, a reckless turn while driving, a yes or no that feels small in the moment. Yet tiny, rushed decisions often carry outsized consequences. One careless reply can fracture a relationship. One split-second lapse can cost your health or your freedom. Conversely, one quick act of courage — a call to reconcile, a decision to get help, a choice to work toward a goal — can shift the course of your life for the better.

Think about how many times a “10-second” moment became a defining memory. A job offer accepted without a second thought might lead to a decade of fulfillment — or regret. A heated comment posted online could haunt you for years.

The 10–10–10 lens asks you to pause and ask : what will this choice look like in ten minutes, ten months, and ten years? That pause grants clarity that emotion alone cannot. Using this principle doesn’t mean overthinking every trivial matter. It’s a filter to apply when stakes are meaningful or when you feel emotionally charged.

Steps to use the 10-10-10 rule effectively:

  • Pause: When tempted to react, give yourself ten seconds. Breathe. Count. This prevents impulsivity.

  • Visualize: Imagine the outcome in ten minutes, ten months, ten years. Which scenarios align with your values?

  • Ask: “Will this decision matter to me tomorrow? Next year? Ten years from now?” If the answer is yes, give it more time and thought.

  • Seek counsel: For decisions with long-term impact, get input from people you trust. Their perspective can reveal blind spots.

The ripple metaphor fits perfectly. Decisions are like stones dropped in a pond — the initial splash is loud, but the widening rings carry consequences farther than we expect. Some ripples fade quickly; others reach distant shores.

I challenge you to share this principle with others. I’ve used the 10–10–10 exercise with my kids for years; it’s now part of their default decision-making toolkit and that's the whole point: make thoughtful choices until that pause becomes a habit.

Life won’t be perfect, but applying a little perspective can keep many regrets at bay. Before you act, consider the tenfold timeline: those ten seconds could define decades. Choose with intention.
