We're celebrating a whole lotta LOVE with Valentine's Day, the Lunar New Year of the Pig with its symbols of fortune & wealth, and Black History Month. Did you know that one of the things that makes Anasa Yoga a very special place is our status as a Black-owned business (BOB)? We are proud to be known as a sanctuary space with a mission-driven focus on the unity in community.  That is our yoga.  And we're especially proud to be recognized as a healthy BOB led by strong Black women because, throughout this country's history, racist and discriminatory practices have challenged the ability of BOB's to exist and to thrive. As we celebrate Black History Month, we're reminded how far we've come thanks to the sacrifices of our trailblazers, civil rights leaders, and activists. We're also reminded how much more work remains to be done to awaken and transform the minds and actions of those who do harm, and to heal the wounds of injustice.

Thank you Katrina and Avenelle for representing us at Pixar's Black Business Fair last week. We'll have a table next week too at Airbnb who is actively boosting Black-owned businesses by hosting their "Buy Black" event at their San Francisco headquarters on Feb. 26.

We were humbled that Oakland Magazine chose pictures of Anasa Yoga for last month's article featuring the Laurel District (see below). The magazine recognized Anasa as "one of the only Black-owned businesses of its kind in the area" which is true in the sense that we are the only Black-owned yoga studio in the Laurel. However, there are many other BOB's to support along MacArthur Boulevard in the Laurel, over 20 of them! Some have been around for decades! So check out my list of addresses and BOB's which includes an unparalleled variety of neighborhood barbers and salons who keep us feeling good about our crowns. Shop local and support your community's BOB's during Black History Month and throughout the year.

our newest Teacher

Sparkle leads her vinyasa flow class at Anasa every Thursday evening 7:00-8:15pm.  This was Annabelle's old time slot since shortly after we opened and she'll be missed.  You'll still see Annabelle helping at the front desk when she isn't travelling with Satya Retreats.

Sparkle has been practicing and studying yoga for 18 years. She started teaching yoga in 2008 and has taught vinyasa flow classes, workshops, teachers trainings and led yoga retreats for LGBTQ people. Sparkle is also a Certified Massage Therapist and runs a successful private practice in Oakland. She is passionate about optimal health and her favorite color is green.

Shining the Light
on Anasa Student  Teri Schlesinger!

Get to know our Teachers and Students a little better so that next time you see them in class or in the grocery store, you can say hi Teri! Send us your stories and pics for future issues.

Yoga came to me in my early 30's, right after my son, Sam, (now 31 years old) was born. I've been practicing ever since and am thankful every day for the peace and freedom Yoga has brought into my life. After 30 years of practice, I still consider myself a beginner and prefer a slow careful practice. A class that focuses on holding a pose while working on alignment and breathing is my favorite. I know that Yoga has increased my strength, kept me flexible, and contributed to any degree of calm I have found in this crazy world. I can remember my first teacher saying "now take a rest in downward dog". What? A rest? In that pose? You must be kidding. But after 3 or 4 years of practice I discovered that downward dog is indeed a resting pose. I guess that makes me an advanced beginner...right?

I found Anasa Yoga soon after the studio opened. At the time I was living in the Laurel neighborhood but even now that I live in San Leandro, I drive to Anasa for a weekly class or two. At Anasa I find a welcoming community, excellent teachers, and a place to park! My current favorite is the Tuesday morning class with Liz Raven. Liz, as is true with every teacher at Anasa, encourages students to do what works for them without worrying about the strength, balance, or ability of anyone else in the room. She understands the link between brain and body and that fascinates me.

I am fortunate enough to have been retired for nearly 3 years. Nineteen years ago I started volunteering at Chabot Space and Science Center (www.chabotspace.org). I'm at the science center 3 or 4 times per month. Being retired leaves me more time for this passion as well as a new one I discovered 2 years ago. Twice a week, I serve as a volunteer Alameda County Marriage Commissioner, marrying couples who drop in to the County Recorder's Office in downtown Oakland to "the knot". Lucky me!!

The Work Exchange Program requires a 3-month commitment to assist in operating and maintaining the studio, or assisting in marketing and social media in exchange for a Class Package. Reliability, strong effort, and excellent customer service are required.

Meditation for Awakening

Using the meditation practice of Tonglen, or "taking and sending," we will cultivate a capacity to be with our pain in a way that awakens compassion and wisdom.
