“ROCK AND WAR” WITH MUSIC LEGEND AND

VIETNAM VET BILLY TERRELL

It’s hard to imagine a more eventful life than the one lived by music legend and Vietnam Veteran Billy Terrell. Desperately poor, Billy dropped out of school to support his family by waiting tables in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

He taught himself how to play guitar, began performing, got discovered, and landed in New York City as a songwriter for Kama Sutra Records. His first record was “They Said It Couldn’t Be Done”

by The Duprees, B-side of the hit  “Around the Corner.” Billy was on his way. Then, he got drafted...Read More>>>

On This Day: The Hainan Island Incident

On April 1, 2001, a United States Navy intelligence aircraft collided with a Chinese interceptor jet sparking a brief international crisis that’s been forgotten in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and the Middle Eastern wars that followed.

The collision, which left a Chinese pilot dead and 24 US crewmembers in Chinese custody on Hainan Island, might have sparked a military confrontation. But a carefully phrased letter from the US saved the day and leaves us with the question: what does “we’re sorry” really mean? Read More>>>

Iraq War Veterans, 20 Years Later: ‘I Don’t Know How to Explain the War to Myself’

In 2003, filmmakers Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker began filming the U.S. Army’s 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment (known as the Gunners) in Baghdad. Twenty years later, they interviewed the soldiers about how they make sense of their role in a war that has yet to be fully reckoned with. Decoding Military Serial Numbers

Thank you to Jim Jamieson for passing along this article on the hidden meanings in military serial numbers. Seven digit serial number beginning with 8? Definitely a woman. Eight digit serial number beginning with 206 means National Guard from Illinois, Michigan, or Wisconsin. Serial numbers started phasing out in favor of Social Security numbers in 1969, only to return in 2011 as the Electronic Data Interchange Personal Identifier (EDIPI).
