From the Pastor's Desk

Dear SCAPC Community,

Everything we do and all that we are as a church comes to pass through your generosity and gifts. So as we look to dedicate our commitments and pledges for the coming year 2025 in worship this coming Sunday, I want you to know that it is my great joy to ask you to participate, contribute, and make a pledge. It is a grace to live out of your abundance and to make ministry happen out of the generous giving of this congregation.

Thank you to those many who have already made a pledge and thank you to those who will bring their pledges and commitments to dedicate in worship on Sunday. It is an honor to steward your dollars into vital forms of ministry and service to the world for the sake of Jesus Christ. Every pledge matters and contributes to our work.

May we continue to widen the circle.

Gratefully yours,

Chris Currie

Dedication Sunday

During worship this Sunday, October 13, we will dedicate to God's service all 2025 Stewardship pledges. For a word on how your Stewardship gifts are allocated, view this message from Megan Guy, 2025 Stewardship Chair.

Hurricane Relief Thanks

Thank you to all who donated funds to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and other organizations providing relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. We thank all who brought requested supplies to the church last weekend. These were transported to Montreat, North Carolina yesterday by SCAPC Pastoral Associate Ashley Brown. We continue to assess the needs of our friends and neighbors and will post updates on supply drives, trip planning, and ways you can get involved on our website, social media, and here in the Quatrefoil.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS, Oct. 13

Please join us for our second annual “Blessing of the Animals” this Sunday, October 13 at 5 p.m. in the front yard of the Land Building as we commemorate St. Francis in the month of October. Bring your pets–on a leash or in a crate/carrier/container–for a short worship service, a blessing, and light refreshments. For those pets who do not travel well, a photo can be a good representative! Our offering will be donations of pet food to our local SPCA. Please RSVP to Pastor Sarah at sarah@scapc.org, no later than Thursday.

40-50s Yak, Snack, & Read

Enjoy a glass of wine and a light fare with your fellow book lovers on Monday, October 14 from 6:00–7:30 p.m. at the Garden District Book Store in The Rink, 2727 Prytania St. For those wishing to start a book club, vote for your favorite title from a short list on the registration form. The cost is $15/person (book price not included). For more details, book titles and registration, visit scapc.org/yak. You may also pay via Venmo @michele-murphy-12.

Writers & Artists Sought

We are looking for writers and artists of all ages (we’d love to get kid writers too!) who are interested in helping us create this year’s Advent devotional on our theme ‘Advent greetings from…’ where we’ll be thinking about advent from the perspective of different characters in the advent story. If you would like to compose a short devotional, about 300 words, for our Advent devotional books and web page, please contact Katie Brendler (katie@scapc.org) by Wednesday, October 23. You will then be given an Advent character (ex: Mary, Shepherd, etc.) and scripture reading from which to write a short reflection/Advent greeting from their perspective. We are also seeking artists to contribute drawings, paintings, or photographs, so please notify Katie if you wish to contribute art or have questions. You do not need to create new art but can send art you have already made.

YAF Pumpkin Carving Party

The Young Adults & Families (YAF) will hold their annual Pumpkin Carving Party on Friday, October 18 from 5-7 p.m. on the Land Building lawn. Pumpkins, carving and decorating supplies, pizza, drinks, and dessert will be provided! Please RSVP on the SCAPC app or our party page.

New Member Recognition and Luncheon

We look forward to recognizing new members in the 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday, October 20 and then celebrating with a lunch following worship in Land Building. All those who have joined in the past year, confirmands and their families are invited! Please RSVP to Christy McCann, bergeronchristy@hotmail.com.

Mosque Field Trip

Join SCAPC’s Interfaith Group for a field trip to Abu Bakr Masjid (Mosque) on Monday, October 21. Meet at the door of the Mosque at 1:20 p.m., or at the Land Building at 12:45 to carpool together. We will watch their prayers and then chat with their Interfaith Liaison and Board Chair, Dr. Bashi, who will answer questions and explain the foundational tenets of Islam. RSVP to: Ashley@scapc.org.

Aden Program for Elder Care

Workshop/Activity Leaders Needed

The Aden Program is seeking volunteers to lead workshops or activities such as pottery, painting, crafting, piano, singing, guitar, exercise, bringing in pets, gardening, reminiscing, cooking, poetry, and speaking about a trip or hobby or profession. If you are interested, or if you have a connection to a musician, artist, writer, exercise professional, gardener, cook, etc., please contact Aden Director Marti McEnery at aden@scapc.org.

Adult Classes

“Genesis” September 8-November 24 | Phifer Library

The Bible’s first book contains many well-known stories, some familiar since childhood: creation and the garden of Eden; an ark full of animals adrift in a flood; Abraham and Isaac; the conniving Jacob; and the dreams of Joseph. Now hear these stories again in a new way, and in hearing, discover the knowledge that God created everything in goodness and love.

This coming Sunday's class will center on Genesis 15:1-21, "The Covenant with Abram", led by Pat Widhalm.

“Faith at Home: A Handbook for Cautiously Christian Parents”

September 8 - November 24 | 2nd floor conference room

As parents, we strive to help our children develop a strong moral foundation, including a strong understanding of Christian faith. With so many contradictions from mainstream culture, however, many parents are left feeling as though religious language is a foreign language and are unsure how to incorporate faith practices into family life. Faith at Home aims to help parents learn this “second language” and introduce it to children in simple and meaningful ways.

This coming Sunday's topic will be "Seasons and Celebrations, part 1", led by Sarah Edgecombe.

Fall Day of Service

SCAPC Volunteers brought the love for our community ministry partners at Saturday's Fall Day of Service!

Thomas Schulingkamp and Miriam Hollar (second and third from left) pitched in at Crescent City Café.

Matt McCann lent his chef's skills in the kitchen at Crescent City Cafe.

At Okra Abbey, Boyd and Parker Pugh, staffer De' Collins, and Mike Pugh created compost at Okra Abbey. Thank you to the Pughs for the new wheelbarrow!

Caroline Gill, Lee Randall and Charlotte Urban prepared a new raised bed for fall planting with Lead Gardener Billie Golin (far left).
