Deep Adaptation in a Rapidly Changing World
"Are we there yet? How much longer?" Who doesn't recognize these questions from impatient children in the backseat of the car when the journey is long and tedious. That's how I'm feeling five months into The Big P. How about you?
I have my routines and not all of it is unpleasant, quite the contrary in fact. I feel blessed and fortunate in so many ways. But, I also feel deeply nostalgic for the good old days of gathering together and creating art, leading retreats at Breitenbush, and long, close hugs from friends. I wonder how much longer it will be before we can feel comfortable together in person again?
I get lonely sometimes. I remind myself that, like it or not, it is what it is. These are the moments of my life. How do I want to spend them? Who do I want to be in these changing times? How do I go forward with intention? And these questions brought me to Jem Bendell's work on Deep Adaptation.
I agree with Mahatma Gandhi that we need to be the change we wish to see in the world. Changing the world starts with changing ourselves. When I found the 4-R's of Deep Adaptation, I felt like it could be a process that helps me transition out of fear and despair and into more conscious living, no matter what lies ahead. Here are the 4-R's I discovered in Bendell's work:
Resilience: What do I value most that I want to keep?
Relinquishment: What do I need to let go of so as not to make matters worse?
Restoration: What can I bring back from other times or other cultures to help me in these difficult times?
Reconciliation: With what or whom do I need to make peace as I awaken to our mutual morality (and mortality)?

I had been reading about Deep Adaptation for some time and wanted to apply it to my own life. So, I invited others to join me in my journey deeper into the 4-R's, and twelve people said yes. Each week we made a SoulCollage® card then came together virtually for card readings and sharings. We came together in community, listened, and learned from one another. Through the imagery, we accessed inner knowledge and collective wisdom, bringing us back to ourselves and strengthening our ability to adapt and recover in these times of unraveling and uncertainty. We set our intentions for how we want to live in a new anything-but-normal future.

I am offering another series of Deep Adaptation in September (see below). Come join me and discover the 4-R's that will help bring you out of paralyzing fear and into loving action. These are the days of your life. How will you spend them? What sort of person do you want to be in the midst of this Great Unraveling?
