News for Living, Working and Playing in Deerfield Township
back-school-bus.jpg

With students at both Mason City Schools and Kings Local Schools heading back to the classroom this week, it's a good time to refresh your own memory about safe driving practices around school buses.

  • Flashing yellow or amber lights mean that a bus is slowing down to prepare to pick up or drop off children. Drivers are allowed to pass a bus at this time but should exercise caution and be prepared to stop quickly.
  • When traveling on a two-lane road, all drivers on either side of the road must stop when a bus begins flashing its red lights and extends the stop sign arm. Drivers passing the bus at this time put children at risk and can be ticketed. Begin driving again only once the bus has started moving.
  • When traveling on a four-lane road or a divided highway, only drivers traveling in the same direction as the bus are required to stop. Traffic moving in the opposite direction may continue as usual.

We wish everyone a safe and happy new school year!

Brush Removal Scheduled for Aug. 21

This month's brush removal is scheduled for the week of Aug. 21. Please place your yard waste at the curb no later than Monday at 7:00 a.m. to ensure it is picked up that week.

As a reminder, brush pickup is designed for typical residential yard trimmings. All limbs, vines, and brush smaller than 1 inch in diameter should be tied with string in bundles not more than 1 foot in diameter or 6 feet in length. Anything with thorns must also be bundled. Please do not tie bundles with wire or electric cord as this will damage the chipper and blades. Limbs more than 6 inches in diameter, old firewood or fence posts, and stumps or tree roots cannot be accepted.
