Last year most schools resorted to online learning due to the pandemic. We are approaching a new school year that will likely be in person. This means you will start to see school busses on the road again. This brings another potential safety hazard to the road each day. Starting in 2016 school busses in Wisconsin implemented a yellow/ amber warning light which acts as a precursor to the red stop lights. These yellow lights indicate to nearby drivers to proceed with caution and be prepared to stop, similar to a traffic light. The greatest risk to children is not riding the bus, but rather approaching and leaving the bus. Teach young kids to stand at least 6 feet from the road or three giant steps. Also consider adding reflective material to your child’s backpack to assist in visibility, as the mornings get darker.  You will also likely notice an increase in foot traffic on the sidewalks in the mornings and afternoon, from kids walking to and from school. This will require extra awareness, especially near crosswalks and while pulling in or out of driveways and parking lots. Every year, preventable accidents occur. Please take the extra time to ensure the safety of our kids and yourself.
