PLEASE HELP MAKE 1,800 ACRES OF WHEAT SAFE FOR CA MALLARD DUCKLINGS
|
Mallards are preparing to make nests in fields of winter wheat in the Central Valley right now, drawn by the lush cover.
But some of those nests won't hatch before the harvesters come through - at least not without your help.
Farmers have applied to enroll more than 1,800 acres in the incentive program. All we need is funding to support the program so we can enter into contracts with farmers.
Our goal is to raise $150,000 to make almost 2,000 acres safe for mallard ducklings. And your help will be leveraged with a $50,000 challenge grant from a very generous donor! Your donation of $200 will make it feasible for a farmer to absorb the risks of delaying harvest on five acres to give ducklings a fighting chance. Can you help us? You can choose any amount - just click on the DONATE button below to get started and help us reach this important goal.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG! TIME FOR WOOD-DUCKING
|
|
Hey wood duck volunteers, hens are starting to look for places to nest this spring – are your nest boxes ready for them?
It's that time of the year to start cleaning out your wood duck box of whatever random debris – sticks, dead mice, starling nests, etc. – happened to accumulate inside.
Beyond that, here are a few more tips for preparing your wood duck boxes:
- Make sure the boxes aren’t leaning backward, which makes it hard for ducklings to climb out and jump, and clear any obstructions from the entrance holes.
- Place 3-4 inches of wood shavings in the box. Do not overfill (the duck might lose its eggs in shavings piled too deep) and DO NOT USE saw dust.
- If you have predator issues and your box is on a pole, line the pole with dish soap, which makes it too slippery for predators to climb.
