Delightful Double Flowers | |
What's even more decadent than a garden full of flowers? A garden full of DOUBLE flowers! Double flowers are simply flowers that have extra layers of petals, sometimes so many that they're virtually unrecognizable as their original species.
Some flowers are almost always double. Wild-type roses are generally single-flowered, but most familiar roses grown in today's gardens are doubles. Same goes with Dahlias. But other double flowers are exceptions to the rule, like double Sunflowers and double Hollyhocks. Either way, their double forms resulted from mutations that have been exploited by plant breeders for their desirable looks, so that we can enjoy them year after year in our own gardens.
Happily, double flowers are no harder to grow than their single-flowered relatives, and they often last longer in bloom. They're extravagant and wonderful, and spectacular in bouquets. Add a few of the following double flowers to your garden for a special floral treat.

Plant Them in Moderation...
The only down side to double blooms is that many are so fully double that they are not as beneficial to pollinators. In some cases all of the flower's reproductive organs have been converted to extra petals, making the flowers sterile, while in others, the few remaining stamens are inaccessible to pollinators through the sheer mass of the petals. If your gardening goals include attracting pollinators, single or semi-double flowers are best.
