This month's member spotlight is Michigan Sugar Company.
Michigan Sugar Company traces its roots back to 1906, when several smaller companies merged their operations. In 2002, the company became a grower-owned cooperative, and in 2004 it merged with Monitor Sugar Company to form the Michigan Sugar Company that exists today. Headquartered in Bay City, the company operates sugarbeet processing facilities in Bay City, Caro, Croswell, and Sebewaing.
Michigan Sugar’s 865 grower-owners plant and harvest approximately 140,000 acres of sugarbeets each year across 17 to 20 counties in Michigan and Ontario, Canada. At its factories, the company processes these beets into about 1.3 billion pounds of sugar annually, which is sold to industrial, commercial, and retail customers under the Pioneer Sugar brand.
Guided by their mission of “Creating Growth & Opportunity” and their purpose of “Making Life Sweeter,” Michigan Sugar continues to play an important role in the region’s agricultural and manufacturing industries.
Safety is also central to their operations. As the company shares, “Safety is one of our company’s core values. The safety of our employees is our number one priority, which means a job done well is a job done safely.”
