Matt Hendrickson

Safety Partner of the Year

Last month, we hosted our Annual Safety Celebration, featuring keynote speaker Tim Bish, founder and lead trainer at Understanding Your AI. Tim presented on “AI in the Modern Safety Workplace,” highlighting how organizations can leverage AI as a tool to enhance workplace safety.

We are proud to give the Pete Crawford Safety Champion Award annually to a GLSTC member who exemplifies commitment, passion, and dedication to the safety of their employees and colleagues. Congratulations to Windemuller.

We also awarded a Safety Professional of the Year Award to Greg King from Alloy Construction. Greg exemplifies what it means to prioritize safety in the workplace while leading by example. He uses his years of experience and dedication to mentor less experienced workers, helping them improve both efficiency and safety.

We recognized Matt Hendrickson from DuPont, as our Safety Partner of the Year. Matt has championed numerous initiatives with the contractor workforce, including ongoing safety improvements. He meets regularly with contractor partners to gather feedback and drive continuous improvement. His leadership has contributed to a remarkable achievement of over four years injury-free among their contractor workforce.

National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Distracted driving is a major cause of preventable crashes and includes three types: manual, visual, and cognitive. Manual distractions take your hands off the wheel, visual distractions take your eyes off the road, and cognitive distractions take your mind off driving. Texting is especially dangerous because it involves all three at once—hands, eyes, and attention are all diverted. Staying safe means keeping your hands on the wheel, eyes on the road, and mind fully focused on driving.

Member Spotlight

This month's member spotlight is Michigan Sugar Company.

Michigan Sugar Company traces its roots back to 1906, when several smaller companies merged their operations. In 2002, the company became a grower-owned cooperative, and in 2004 it merged with Monitor Sugar Company to form the Michigan Sugar Company that exists today. Headquartered in Bay City, the company operates sugarbeet processing facilities in Bay City, Caro, Croswell, and Sebewaing.

Michigan Sugar’s 865 grower-owners plant and harvest approximately 140,000 acres of sugarbeets each year across 17 to 20 counties in Michigan and Ontario, Canada. At its factories, the company processes these beets into about 1.3 billion pounds of sugar annually, which is sold to industrial, commercial, and retail customers under the Pioneer Sugar brand.

Guided by their mission of “Creating Growth & Opportunity” and their purpose of “Making Life Sweeter,” Michigan Sugar continues to play an important role in the region’s agricultural and manufacturing industries.

Safety is also central to their operations. As the company shares, “Safety is one of our company’s core values. The safety of our employees is our number one priority, which means a job done well is a job done safely.”
