Free Grant-Funded Construction Safety Training

Great Lakes Safety Training Center, in partnership with the Chicagoland Construction Safety Council, is offering a series of FREE OSHA grant-funded construction safety courses in 2026. These four-hour, in-person awareness-level sessions provide practical training on some of the industry's most critical workplace hazards and prevention strategies.

Upcoming classes include:

• Harmful Silica – July 29 & September 24, 2026

Learn about the dangers of respirable crystalline silica and how to protect workers exposed during cutting, drilling, crushing, and other construction activities.

• Excavation Dangers – July 30, 2026

Explore the hazards associated with trenching and excavation work, including cave-ins, struck-by incidents, and other below-grade risks.

• Work Zone Hazards – September 23, 2026

Gain essential knowledge on temporary traffic control, work zone safety planning, and protecting workers in active roadway environments.

All sessions run 7:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and are designed for construction workers, supervisors, and safety professionals looking to strengthen their hazard awareness and safety knowledge. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

This month's member spotlight is United Association Local 85.

Founded on May 1, 1892, United Association Local 85 has been serving the skilled trades industry for more than 130 years. Headquartered in Saginaw, MI, Local 85 operates membership training centers in Saginaw and Traverse City, with a new training center coming soon to Grayling. Their jurisdiction spans 30 counties across Michigan, supporting contractors and communities throughout the region.

United Association Local 85 provides contractors with a safe, skilled, and productive workforce in the plumbing, steamfitting, and HVACR industries. Through comprehensive training and a commitment to excellence, they help ensure projects are completed to the highest standards. Their motto, “We do it right, the first time,” reflects the professionalism and craftsmanship that have defined the organization for generations.

Safety is a fundamental value for Local 85 and the United Association as a whole.
