Great Lakes Safety Training Center is pleased to announce that we received funding through OSHA's highly esteemed Susan G. Harwood Training Grant Program. This grant will allow GLSTC to expand access to high-quality safety education while helping employers—particularly small and medium-sized businesses—provide essential training to their employees at no cost.
Free Excavation Awareness Training
Through the Susan G. Harwood Training Grant Program, GLSTC plans to train employers and workers in an effort to reduce workplace injuries and fatalities associated with trenching and excavation.
The new four-hour, instructor-led course will focus on hazard recognition, hazard avoidance, and OSHA-compliant safe work practices. Participants will learn to identify excavation hazards, understand the purpose and limitations of protective systems, recognize unsafe conditions requiring intervention by a competent person, and make safer decisions before entering or working around excavations. The course will also address employer responsibilities and worker rights under the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
Most sessions will be held at GLSTC’s Midland training facility, with at least six additional sessions offered at partner locations throughout Michigan.
Watch for 2027 training dates and registration information!
Great Lakes Safety Training Center, at the time of initial publication of this document 09/2026, is funded by a grant of $110,000 federal funds, which constitutes 100% of the program budget. Zero percent, or $0 of the program budget, is financed by non-governmental sources.
