Delta County Public Health Reports Increase in Flu Hospitalizations

Delta County, CO — February 7, 2025, Delta County Public Health is reporting a rise in flu-related hospitalizations in the community and is encouraging residents to get vaccinated, emphasizing that it is not too late to protect themselves and their loved ones.

“Flu activity is increasing in our county, and we are seeing a significant increase in flu cases compared to this time last year with more hospitalizations, particularly among older adults and those with underlying health conditions,” said Leah Rawson, Public Health Nurse Clinic Manager at Delta County Public Health. “Getting a flu vaccine now can still provide protection for the rest of the season, reducing the risk of severe illness and hospitalization.”

Flu season typically peaks between December and February but can extend into the spring. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone six months and older. Delta County Public Health offers both the regular flu vaccine and the high-dose flu vaccine for adults 65 and older, who are at higher risk of complications. Flu vaccines are also available at local pharmacies throughout the community.

Why Get Vaccinated?

  • Flu vaccination can reduce the risk of flu illness, hospitalization, and death.
  • It helps protect vulnerable populations, including infants, older adults, and individuals with chronic conditions.
  • Even if you still get the flu, vaccination can make symptoms milder and shorten the duration of illness.

Residents are encouraged to call Delta County Public Health at 970-874-2165 for more information on vaccine availability.
