Effective July 1, 2024, Delta Dental of Virginia (Delta Dental) will require the submission of a completed Treating Dentist Attestation Form (Attestation) to accompany claims for comprehensive orthodontic treatment with a total fee under $2,500. This requirement applies only to CDT Codes: D8070 – D8090

Whether treatment is provided in-person or virtually, Delta Dental requires that orthodontic care meet the same standards defined by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), including a clinical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment plan. This Attestation will help confirm that patients receive appropriate clinical oversight for their orthodontic treatment with the continued market emergence of Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) Orthodontics, where patients are instructed to perform self-evaluations independently, take their impressions, and order products, such as orthodontic aligners. Potential risks inherent in self-directed orthodontic care include not having had a thorough examination, diagnosis, and treatment plan. Additionally, self-directed appliances may not fit properly, causing permanent damage.

This new process aims to ensure that patients receiving care are properly evaluated for orthodontics and receive appropriate supervision. Orthodontic claims under $2,500 with CDT Codes: D8070-8090 that do not include a completed Attestation will be denied.

This Attestation is available on our website's Dentists Forms page.
