Delta's Reliability Issues Fuel Pilot Hiring

Delta Air Lines has been a reliable, on-time machine for years. Year after year, Delta has been ranked the #1 overall airline in the United States, with a large part of that ranking based on its reliability. While they are still #1 for now, airlines like United are closing the gap.

2025 marked Delta's 100th anniversary, and the airline also paused pilot hiring for most of the year. Last year's hiring pause, along with provisions in the pilots' 2023 contract, has left the airline understaffed and struggling to complete flights. Recent cancellations have increased significantly, with many attributed to a lack of available flight crews, and Delta management has taken notice.

Delta restarted pilot hiring earlier this year and is now rapidly expanding its new-hire classes while American and United have temporarily slowed theirs. The goal is to get more pilots on the line and maintain Delta's #1 ranking, which is excellent news for anyone hoping to fly for Delta. Good luck to everyone applying!

Mid-Year Hiring Report

As we reach the halfway point of 2026, fall pilot training classes are ramping up once again, and the outlook for the rest of the year remains positive. Despite a year of global uncertainty that has affected airlines around the world, the demand for qualified pilots continues to be strong.

At the beginning of the year, the major airlines projected significant hiring needs, and those forecasts are largely holding true. As pilots continue moving to the majors, regional airlines are expanding class sizes to fill those vacancies. This movement creates opportunities throughout the industry and keeps hiring moving forward.

While the aviation industry will always face challenges, the hiring environment remains healthy. Stay consistent, keep building experience, and be ready when the next opportunity comes your way. Your future seniority number is worth the effort.
